New Idea 12A Spreader

The tires on my New Idea 12A spreader are about shot-not sure they will make it thru this year. New 24" tires are to costly. I stopped at my local tire dealer and he said if I could find 20" rims, he has all kinds of tires for that rim - cheap! Has anyone done that and are those rims available and where do I look to find them. Thanks in advance.

If you can't find a wheel that has the same center you may want to cut your centers out and weld them on a 20" wheel. I've built some that had valve stems rotted out. It works good if your not using it at high speeds. Just get it as straight as possible.

Look around a few scrapyards and farms with a bunch of old machinery, and look for an old spreader with 20" rims. Chances are very good that the bolt pattern id the same- they don't change much. Then, go to some truck stop and get their old road tires that they can't run because of DOT regs. Slap a tube in them if you need to, but they will last a long time. I have a neighbor who gives me his when he can't run them anymore and it saves him the disposal fees.

The 20" wheels that were on some of the New Idea corn pickers are the same bolt pattern as the manure spreaders so that widens your salvage yard opportunities.

Wouldn't a change in tire diameter change the driven speed of the seed delivery mechanism and require a change in settings?

Where are you? My Dad has an old NI spreader that's going to be scrapped - the tires and rims are about the only thing left of value. 9.00 20's, 8-bolt rims. N/W WI.

The new idea pickers sometimes used the exact size wheels other times they used 24" i think it was. I put a set on a 12A for a customer and they worked perfect.
