New here just dug out an A/C Roto Baler from a ladys yard i think its 1937 needs belt, springs, and maybe some other things my main question is what hp will be needed to run it and will my 8n run it if its hp is sufficient any thoughts will be grately appreciated..........

It does not take a lot of power to run a Roto Baler , but a two stage clutch , or live power, is a must. With outlive power, you will have to put the tractor into neutral each time the pickup stops, let up the clutch so the bale can be strung, and discharged . The shove in the clutch, put the tractor back into gear, and proceed forward. Enough to drive you crazy for sure. I don't think your 8N is the ideal tractor for this baler, but it will run it. Bruce

I had a roto baler years ago and you could not give me one of those pain in the back side machines. Takes very little HP to run one and I did it with a A/C B so the 8N will handle it just fine other then lack of live PTO. You need a double windrow to bale with them to work well and even then you can end up with some funny bales

Based on my experience with an old a.c. Roto baler,

Take the 8n, hook it to the Roto baler, pull it out to the corner of the yard, ask the wife to plant you a climbing red rose beside it, so in a year or so, the old piece will be covered in roses and be a nice conversation piece.

It requires a tractor with the hand clutch or double clutch so you can stop the forward motion of the baler as it wraps the bale, while the pto keeps running. It would be difficult to operate with an 8n.

If you want a baler, buy you an old new holland or John Deere baler, before you buy, check with your local dealer an be sure he can still get parts for the baler you plan to buy, as you will need parts!!!!!

Good luck,

They weren't nicknamed 'man eater' for no reason. Many an operator got pulled into those things.
Know man who lost his brother in one in the 50's. If I remember, you sometimes had to get off the tractor to get the twine to wrap. Only ever saw one in use in our community which had an Allis dealer.
Local farmer baled sericia lezpedeza on my Dad's farm in the late 50's. I remember my older brothers trying to stack those little round bales on a trailer.

We ran Roto Balers for years and still have one we use sometimes,if you get it have someone that knows these balers to show you the ins and outs or you'll never get it to work right for you.It ain't the baler BTW that causes the problem its the operators. With an 8N you don't have LPTO so you'll need to knock it out of gear every time to make a bale
it can be done as we baled with an AC B for quite awhile until we bought a WD45.They work best behind a WD or a D14/D15.Also to handle the bales you need hay hooks and standards on the back and front of your wagon. And work good in a stock trailer.

There were actually a few short runs done at various times after 1960 due to demand. I think the last one was as late as 1972.

There was an article in Farmshow magazine about a new york farm that had several of the rotobalers and loved them.I think they had about as many for extra parts. There was a guy i think he's dead now , that had a 8n and a rotobaler . I remember seeing his stack of bales.

forget about running any baler with a n ford they will not handle a baler... Experience speaking here.

Yep they had a B/C power unit on them and some also had an electric overdrive unit to make them tie very fast most were on the ones with the double conveyors so they didn't have to stop while making a bale.
