more JD sickle bar mower questions

Thanks for all the help thus far! On this old Number 5 mower, the gear box is all caked with old oil. I figured the seals were leaking when it was in use, but also noticed that it has an open vent in the cover. Is it just the nature of the beast to leak oil out the vent even if all seals are good? Is it worth it to replace all seals or will oil just keep leaking out the top vent? Any ideas on how to stop the oil leakage?

Mine leaks around the cover. My dads leaked there also. Just keep checking the level and watch for a leak around the flywheel shaft.

Reviewed the OPERATOR'S MANUAL No. OM-H10-1047 under the [b:654c4848f0]DRIVE HOUSING[/b:654c4848f0] section on page 13 the second paragraph the second sentence states:

"[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]Keep breather hole in housing cover free if dirt and grit at all times.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]"

You might consider cleaning the mower drive housing to remove all the old oil and dirt.

Drain the old oil by removing the drain plug at the bottom of the drive housing.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]Traditional Farmer[/b:654c4848f0] on filling the drive housing up to the oil plug with [i:654c4848f0]John Deere Special Purpose Corn Head Grease[/i:654c4848f0].

Use your mower and the check for leaks.

If the drive housing still has leaks, then you can consider replacing the seals.

Hope this helps and good luck with the No. 5 sickle mower.

Pure speculation on my part, but previous owner probably did not grease the bearing.

Sanded the area and repainted.

Also made sure the bearings were greased.

Watched the no. 5 video. Watched the vibration and it looks like mine. A fellow told me to find a 9' bar and sickle and the vibration will go away. He used 2 of then with 9' bars and swore there was no vibration. Maybee the extra 2' of sickle balanced it.
