Ford square baler

My brother has a Ford square baler-it has a sort of ram rod where the auger usually is-been awhile since I've seen it-I think a 532 model?Anyway, the'clutch' assembly on the front of the flywheel either sheared something,or slipped, and stopped rotating the flywheel. He wants me to come help him repair it,so is there anything special needed,or anything most likely to have failed? Thanks,Mark.

If it is a 532 Ford baler it generally uses a slip clutch with one disc that the pto shaft can slip and another disc so that the flywheel can slip. They are all pressurized by some metal strip springs. These are adjustable but take care not to overtighten as then things won't slip when they should.
Have not had any problem with ours but a neighbor had broken the friction disc or discs and had the same problem where everything would slip. If this is a new baler to you, they may have loosened the adjustment bolts in the fall so it doesn't freeze up as easily. According to NewHolland parts the discs may be in service yet. (but at what price)

We had one with the clutch discs, but didn't have the spring type clutch. There was a collar that you turned to tighten it.

I have a 532 in my "junk row" here.. It too has the slip clutch.

Need a machine for parts or to use (located in SE Michigan)? Mine's for sale/trade. Used it in 2013 to put up 1500 bales worked good then, but bought a bigger capacity baler in 14. Had always been shedded, except for the last couple months.. All my sheds are jammed full, or I'd keep it for backup, and hate to let it keep sitting out, because it will surely be junk.

I talked to my brother tonight and it is not a 532,but a 51(?).But he says the slip clutch is slipping and the flywheel does not turn with the pto.We will work on it Saturday and I will post back what is wrong.Mark

Not sure on your baler... but the 532 has an over running clutch built into the hub at the flywheel and it's somewhat notorious for crumbling. Then there is two pairs of slip clutches on the flywheel. One for the drive on the PTO and the other between the flywheel face and the gearbox. I suspect the older balers are much the same. ORC's are expensive if they're still available. I ended up welding the drive yolk to the clutch hub on mine several years ago... It worked at the time, but don't use the baler anymore now. Running those old Ford's is an exercise in.... patience. Most things on them are made from unobtainium.
