Replacing Disc blades

Have a Kewanne disc. Have multiple broken blades to replace scattered throughout the 4 gangs (yep, we got rocks/barrel-size boulders here in Preble Co).
The appropriate replacements purchased are 18" (the older ones that are intact are about 16"). I am inclined to put at least 2 on each gang (maybe the inside/outside blades) for a symetrical approach, and fill in the rest with the serviceable ones.
Another suggested to put all on 1 gang...seemed like it might make an issue with tracking straight/level.
Sporadic/ low acreage use.
Opinions?

I agree. Buy enough to put all new on the front.Put the used on back. Save the extras back for future use. Sounds like you're going to eventially need them.

Are you using rock blades or standard blades? Notched blades are weaker than standard; standard blades are weaker than rock blades. Do you do any rock removal? We took a lot of rocks off some of our land, not much breaking of machinery anymore.

Buy good blades the cheap ones from a farm store will last about three years and you are rebuilding it again. On broken blade is bad luck three or four they are just worn out. New on the front, and the best left overs on the rear.

If you are gonna use old blades put one on the outside gangs on the very last outside disc. Just do all new on the inside. Got the thing apart just as well put new blades and bearings.

Agri Supply Co. has a www site. I have used their disc harrow parts for years. They have Indian and Brazilian discs which are pretty similar, just a minor difference in the metal formula but I never noticed it in performance.

They come in different thicknesses so for rocks, I'd get the thickest they have and you may be able to quit having to replace them.

Other thing is that I like to run my harrows deep and deep means large diameter discs. So, when replacing I replace all on the axle if worn significantly, like you have, and in doing so, I go with the largest diameter that will fit my harrow....clearance between the top of the disc and the frame.

Scalloped blades are for tearing up sod, especially hard clays. Smooth are for harrowing.

The cupped blades fit some JD harrows and are said to cut better. I had one JD implement with them and I didn't like them. I liked the normal shaped blade better.

Pay particular attention to your axle shape and ensure that you select the right hole shape in your discs. On a big order they will ship motor freight. You may get delivery to your property or may have to go to the freight terminal to pick them up. I have had to do both.

Good Luck,
Mark
