Potato digger Any ideas as to what make or model?

Trying to find a make and model for this potato digger? Also what is the wheel in the front for? Maybe a depth wheel? Thanks

My guess would be John Deere. I have a similar one, on rubber tires, with two steel dolly wheels instead of that single one. Same bolt together u-joint yokes, same layout of the frame and shafts. The single wheel is likely designed to crush any vines that are still standing, makes them go through a little easier.

Thank you Harold. Learning that and what some others have dug up, it seems it was invented by Issac Hoover of Avery Ohio in 1885. First models being Horse drawn of course. They manufactured them and sold them through John Deere and then in 1926 JD bought the company. Thanks and very interesting.
