Lifting cylinder repair

I have a JD 46 loader that I believe needs the cylinders rebuilt. The bucket has enough lifting power to put the front wheels in the air but the lifting cylinders just groan when the same pressure is applied. Over the winter months the bucket would not lift off the ground with a full load of plowed snow. I think there is a seal leaking inside. I've tried to make the repair myself but could not figure out how to remove the seal end of the cylinder. It has a nut and set screw retaining the of the cylinder. Does anyone have a recommendation about disassembling these? I was able to determine there was no threads in the inside of the tube.

Loosen jam nut unscrew set screw. Push inner part into barrel far enough to find wire ring dig it out then give rod good pull and everything should come out. Good Luck!

Great information, thank you. I'll give it a try. Any idea what the torque should be when setting the jam nut on the end of the shaft?
 
JD had a habit of hiding retainers in their cyl. Sometimes they even make you work through a hose port. re the lock nut- just snug up the set screw and tighten the nut to hold it in place.

I gave it a shot this evening and it worked great. Slid right into the body and I can see the retaining ring. Now I have my Saturday project lined up. Thank you again

AMAZINGLY, as did Buinder!

I was able to remove the retaining ring and pull the cylinder apart. Wore a goodly amount of fluid in the process but was successful. Down side, I am now waiting for new seals. The last set was incorrect and too large to install.

This may be a silly question but....

All the photos I've seen of the 46 loaders have the cylinders mounted with the tube at the drivers heals and the shaft pointed forward at the bucket. I did some research and now understand there is more work completed by the cylinder pushing the shaft out than is possible retracting the shaft into the body of the cylinder. Do you think my loaders issue of not lifting well could have something to do with the instalation of the shafts point back at the operators station? When I bought this rig there were a lot of "farmer fixes" and the reverse instalation of the cylinders has me wondering how it may affect performance.
