Electric running gear

Am I imagining this or did someone here once say that the number of lug nuts (bolts) denotes the tonnage of the running gear? I am working on one of my hay wagons (seized spindle) and it has five bolts holding on the tire. I got to thinking that means it is a five ton gear? It is a model 550. Man I have overloaded that in the past. I usually haul five round bales on it every couple of days not to mention the alfalfa picked up out of the field every year. No wonder I am needing to put gussets on the steering arm and weld up cracks!

No. Yours is likely to be a 5 ton gear by its number, but it could also be a 3 or 4 ton gear if it's 5 bolt. I've seen 6 bolt gears that are 5 ton-10 ton (more if they're tandems).

5 bolt lug denotes a lite duty wagon. I only have one, and it is used as a 8x14 flat deck wagon for square bales only. I have 6 bolt 6 ton gears under my 175 bu. Gravity boxes, and 6 bolt 8 ton gears under my 200 bu box and also under 8x20 round bale racks that regularly haul 11 rounds at a time. If you've got cracks, I'm guessing it's overloaded. I have never had to weld on any of these combinations.

I have two of those, one set short with a small gravity box on it, the other set long with a bale thrower rack on it. The short one has cracked and been welded even though it hasn't been overloaded (by me at least). I think it has more to do with turning too short when loaded while trying to snake it into a spot in the shed. It might just be me but it seems as though the short wheelbase gets stressed more around the kingpins when the steering is against the stops than the long wheelbase. Or there could be something wrong with that gear that I never noticed.

Here is a thread I started for a Montgomery Ward hay wagon - which might have the info you are looking for.

Good luck,

Yes, generally a 5 bolt hub is a 5 ton gear.... but they did make the 5025 model that was considered a 6 ton with 5 bolt hubs. Here is a later model chart .
