IH hay rake #5

We have this ancient hay rake, found ID on this site, that it is a IH #5. Need a cylindrical wheel bearing for one of the small rear wheels. Anyone one know where to find, or how to retrofit with some newer style? My Case IH dealer found a Case part no. W16154, but it is discontinued.

I have one of those rakes (has been a very good
rake, but not the best in the turns). That same
wheel/bearing configuration also appears on some
sickle mowers of that era. I have a IH #31 mower
that has the same trailing wheel assembly. This
might help if you can locate a salvage mower.
There are other similar mowers, but I cannot
confirm that they have the same bearing you are
looking for. Perhaps someone will have a salvage
mower or rake and can help.

I have a rake that is a lot like that one but had 36 inch front wheels on it but the back ones look to be the same size as what you have. I do have it all taken apart. I would have to look and see if I still have the bearings in those smaller wheels

Todd Stauffer had some parts for the basket. PM me if you don't find the phone number online. He had some of those rakes. I have the sister to yours. I got some tine from Sloans Express. The rake rakes okay but don't try to back up with it. I want get a small rotary rake to do smaller odd shaped fields. The old No. 5 it just too clumsy to maneuver in tight places. bjr

I have a rake like that in little pices ready to go to scrap. The little wheels are here and should have a good bearing. I will look when it quits raining. send me a email with info

Rich, what you have is called a 4 bar enclosed gear hay rake, no model number and it is an entirely different animal than the No 5 rake. The only parts that will interchange is the clamps that hold the teeth on that I bought off of you and the complete rear wheel if they are steel wheels. I have lost count of how many of the model you have that I have brought back to life. The teeth will not interchange. I brought one of the No. 5 rakes back to life and have parts of anouther here in the junk row.

I have one in the junk row as well. R Akin lives just a very few miles from the factory that makes those bearings you are looking for, He can make them in any size you need. If anybody else is interested in wanting any of those type of bearings post back. I have sent from Ohio to Canada those bearings but he now has it figgured out how to do that so I am not involved with that any more. I think it was R Akin that first got me acuainted with the one that makes thos bearings even tho only about 17 mile apart.

If I had my book in front of me I could tell you what years that model was built but it is the last model 4 wheel rake McCormick built. Believe of top of my head from about 55 to 65. They did make most of it good but goofed up with the front axle as it does not have the ground clearance it needs to work properly in heavy or double raked hay. If they would have raised the axle up like was on precious models and used a chain drop to the whels it would have meen a good rake. I just have not yet been able to figure out that modification so I have one setting in junk row and the one I used some parts off of to rebuild one that after 2 years is still setting on the dealer's lot because of that axle problem. Detachable link drive chain is earlier while roller drive chain is later. And I could get you a thousand of those bearings new if you needed them.

Hey Leroy,

I have a pamphlet for the "Brand New Super C With Fast Hitch".

It talks about all of the things a person can do with a SC, and at the very end, it says, and "Rake up to 25 acres of the heaviest hay with the Brand New No. 5 rake".

It is dated late 1952... Bryce

Bryce you have to remember that their heavy hay back at that time would be called light hay today and then a lot of the hay when it was mowed by a cutter bar fell flat as was straight stems with nothing to keep it fluffed up in the swath and as long as the hay laying in the swath was not over 12" deep you were OK. When you weretrying to roll a second swath in with the first and that first swath was laying 24" high and you had to drive over it that is when the problems came about. And you raked around the field only no back and forth so you could not combine 2 windwrors by going both ways to make it.

Here's a photo of our bearing. It is 4" long, and the diameter is
1-7/8 inches (the basic frame; the rollers stick out past the 1-7/8) The shaft it fits on is 1-1/4.
Let me know if yours matches, and how much you want? We would gladly pay shipping etc. Where are you? We are in michigan 616-754-4719
