Just picked up a Ford 8N that has a 4FT Mott Hammer Mower on the 3pt. I have never seen one before. He said they would use it to cut the woods road with it. Are they worth anything and useful.

(quoted from post at 21:13:02 03/11/15) Must be a flail type mower??
up, Hammer knife is Mott's term for flail mowers. There biggest feature is that they do not throw rocks, like a brush hog. Knives and other parts are available from anypne who sells ALAMO products (current owner of Mott), or on line from flailmaster.com. Flailmaster is a very good place to do business with.

I have 2 Mott fail mowers on the place. They are about 2 foot wide and when they run do a good job

Twp use to have a 7' on a 35 Massey, did the nicest job on roadsides. Then they thought they needed new and went to rotary mowers with twice the HP to run them. And the Mott did not throw the grass all over the road to make driving dangerous by hitting grass-weeds with your tire when trying to stop. All the road depts would be better off running them now yet over the mowers they are using.

I used to run them for the DOT here. They do cut nicely. You need to know a few things first. You must run them on the ground. If you lift it a little you will get a ragged cut. They don't cut well if the grass is wet. If you cut over or hit a stump, you will sear the blades rite off the mower. If the weather is dry, It can be a dusty job.
