Sickle Mower Stub Guards

I have a 456 New Holland sickle mower and I'm thinking of putting stub guards on it. I understand its almost impossible to plug a bar with stub guards the way you can with traditional guards. Is this true? Anyone here run stub guards on their mower? Anything I should know about putting them on my mower? Are they worth the money to replace the traditional guards that I have. Thank you in advance for the advice.

I use stub guards on my swather but have never used them on a sickle mower. In grass hay they seem to cut a lot better and keep from pluging. I use the John Deere adjustable tops on every other guard. That makes it easier to keep the sickle down on the guards. There may be some others that make the adjustable tops now as the JD ones are pretty spendy. These will cut in pretty nasty thick grass hay.

We have a JD 1219 haybine that came with stub guards. It's our backup/loan out mower we have a NI 5209 discbine that we generally use. When we first tried it out to see how it worked it was raining lightly and the grass field was soaked, I expected it to plug up, but it did very well. It won't mow as fast as the disc mower can, but in some of the fields you shouldn't be going that fast anyway.

I had Heston PT10 mower conditioner. It would plug up when wet and I always had problems finishing up a field when running over perviously cut windrows, or going back over the outside windrow that the tractor tires had laid down it would plug. After I put stub guards on it I rarely had a problem. Go for it.

Around me some of the Amish run a couple standard guards up near the knife head end and stubguards on the rest of the bar. Say it works good. I know in a haybine it cuts plugging a lot but there's no fixing one if you catch a rock.

You won't get nearly as nice of a cut as you will with the narrow double New Holland guards.I also use a NH 456 to cut hay and I wouldn't put stub guards on it,I tried them on an AC mower once and didn't like them at all.

Traditional Farmer,

I have the NH 451 mounted mower that is used in hilly hay ground. I have always wondered how a trailer mower would work in hills and irregular shaped fields. Do you have any comment?

One grass that stops up my J.D. sickle mower is tickle grass.
You may not have it there. Even at 2 to 3 inches tall, it will shut the sickle mower down.
Tickle grass spreads during drought times here, and takes over. Then I have to disk it, replant bluestem native again. During wetter years, the native will keep it at bay.
