3 pt Snowblowers

Not for this winter, but next. What are some good mfrg. Thinking of a 2 stage,78-84 inches wide,to go on a ford 4000su or 861. I have heard that meteor is ok??? Must you have a live pto?

I have an Aquilon 72" but I think they are out of business. Live PTO
is very important because at the end of each run you will want to
stop the tractor while allowing the blower to continue to run till it
clears. Otherwise it will want to plug when you stop it when it is
full of snow.

I don't think an 861 will be good fit, as the 5 spd reverse is likely too fast. I would think live pto would help, to allow the tractor to stop if you need to, when or if it bogs down in deep or hard packed snow etc. I had a 6' Loftness on a 3600, with the 8 speed and it was fine, also had the same one on a smaller compact 33 hp tractor, and though underpowered a bit, I was able to make good use of it in most conditions, slower but I was in no hurry.

Brand wise, many look similar in construction and materials used, the Loftness was just fine.

4000 SU may handle either size, but if questionable stay as wide as the rear tires, also nice to have a hydraulic chute and or tip at the end of the spout on the chute, as without a cab, you will be adjusting that constantly if there is any wind, or you will be coated in a thick layer of cold snow, trust me on that, and it can be about as miserable as it gets, these really call for a tractor with a cab. Even at that, they are really effective, so I'd often do the main part of the clearing when the wind subsided, it makes all the difference if its a calm day.

I've run a 7 foot Allied on a 3cyl 2000, 6 speed and standard PTO. It's a bit much for the tractor but it does work. Whatever you get be sure the driveshaft doesn't bottom out when it's lowered.

I have a 84 inch Allied rear push blower on a Ford 3000 8speed
with live PTO. In low reverse there is a lot of clutch pushing to
make the first pass when the snow is deep.
I also have 84 inch Erskine rear pull blower on a Ford 4000SU
8speed with live PTO and it works great although I sometimes
have to make the first pass with the blower raised leaving belly
deep snow for a second pass. The extra HP helps. I leave the pull
blower on this tractor as the clutch pushing would kill me working
in reverse and having to do a lot of clutching. ( 1st gear is a lot
lower than reverse )
I also have a Ford 860. It does NOT work with rear push blower.
The reverse gear is too fast. I have a six foot rear pull blower on it
and it works fair in dry snow. Wet snow - wait a day and let it
freeze and then blow.
All the tractors also have front blade. All are in northern
Wisconsin and a locations 5 to 25 miles apart.

Hope this helps you.

Ever hear of an over running coupler on the pto? I have used an Erskine pull behind on a 8-n
Ford since the early 70's with no problems.

Allied/Farm King/Buhler makes two different 7 foot blowers. The single cross auger one has a smaller impeller and works better with smaller horse power tractors. The older model was a Y840 or even older Y84. A seven footer will allow you to make a pass and not have to drive on unblown snow with your tractor.

I have a Y84 that I used on a 47 PTO HP tractor with few issues.

First picture is a Y840

Second picture is a Buhler 8420
