This is a old very used parts baler that I resurrected. I went and changed oil in the gear box 80-90 and now leaks out of input shaft seal and was wondering it would be possible to use corn head grease (00 weight) in it. What is the advice here? bjr

Does it leak a lot or just make a mess?If it just makes a mess and doesnt 'mess up' the slip clutch,I would probably leave it alone and check once in a while. You probably put on very many hours.I would 'reseal' it if the oil runs out.(or if you are wanting a show queen)I think 'corn head' grease would be cost prohibitive for that big of a gearbox. It would be a very expencive 'band-aid' as well.

Did you happen to use synthetic oil? Just curious on this one. I've had two small engine shaft seals go bad the instant I switched to synthetic oil. Don't know if it was the synthetic or just the seal's time to fail. Would be curious to know what kind of oil you used.

Thanks,
Bill

You know.. FIX IT!! I did the "keep check" on my wobble box on my swather and the leak ended up getting worse in between my checking.. locked that sucker up.. exp. fix..fix it and then no worries for the most part...

I have a old bush hog, or slasher or what ever you want to call it and would check the oil in the gear box and it would be empty fill it up and the next time I used it was empty. Three years ago I filled it up with corn head grease and have never fill it again. Your mileage may vary.
