Another IH 37 Disk Question

I have an IH #37 10 ft. disk and I am considering getting another one that is 14 ft. Found two in pretty good condition. But one has the old style pipe bearings you grease and the other sealed bearings. Any opinion which is better other than you don't have to grease the sealed ones. Mine has the pipe bearings and I have not had any problems with them. Thanks. Al

Quality ball bearings are preferred (in my opinion) over the cast bearings for many reasons.

The disc will pull easier with ball bearings. You should stop and grease the old iron bearings roughly every hour or two. You can work deeper with the sealed ball bearings. The ball bearings will likely be less expensive to replace, last longer, and a variety of aftermarket alternatives for the current ST491A bearing are readily available. The latest style ball bearings are greasable, and are a 1-piece bearing. Earlier ones used 2 flanges and a bearing, and I don't remember if they were greasable or not.

I wouldn't turn down a disk with either style of bearing, so long as they aren't twisted up or sprung or something. I'd pay half as much or less for one with the old cast bearings, though.

I say go with the sealed bearings. If the old style is cheap enough and its just going to be used on a acre or so then it will probably be ok.

Thanks for the input. I had been leaning to one with cast bearings because that is what I have. My dad bought it used 40 years ago and it still works good. Probably disk about 50 acres a year. Now I will look closer at the one with sealed bearings. Al

Eatere one will be just as good as the other, just have to spend some time greasing the one with the white iron mearings and properyl greased they never wear out. The sealed bearings supposidly pull just a bit easier but if you have the power to pull that size then you will not notice the difference. Amish friend said he could tell the difference in pulling on a 7 blade on a side model on the 7" spacing but that is with 5 belgin horse power. Size of blades and blade spacing of either the 7" or 9" spacing will do more to change power requiremwnts than bearing types. Go with one with best overal condition, largest blades and narrowest blade spacing.

Thanks for the input. I should have more than enough power to pull a 14 ft. with a 6105R JD with 4-WD. I would like to get something larger as the 10 ft. is almost too small now. I like the IH 37 disks and a 14 ft. is the largest size I have seen. Both disks I am looking at have 7 inch spacing just like my 10 ft. Al
