Looking for a plow. Would like to find a roll-over but they seem pretty expensive. Saw a reasonably priced 5 bottom Oliver 565 on Craigslist.
Would this be a good plow to go with a 1486 or would it be a bit small?
Not sure how much I'd use it, currently chisel/disc on dryland. But would plow if I could rent some irrigated ground again.

oliver plows are in my opinion the better of the bunch. I had a 565 and I liked it a lot. I think the 565 is a 14 or 16 inch adjustable plow. I sold my 565 for a 548 which was i think adjustable from 16 to 18. mine were 4 bottoms and I pulled them with a oliver 1850 and an IH 886 and then the 4-18 with a john deere 4520. I think your 1486 could pull a 5-16 or a 5-18 very well depending on your soil.

A 565 is a bit light in the steering post. Don't max it out in terms of speed or find something heavier. A 588 would be more suited to the horsepower although it is quite a bit more expensive than a 565.

If you say you don't know how much you would use it I think you will be fine. I have never used an Oliver plow, but have heard very good reports from those that have. We used to pull a 5 16" IH plow with an 886 in clay ground and had no problems, so I don't think you would have horsepower issues with a 1486.

Used to pull a 6 bottom 16" IH 720 with my 1486. did a fine job. The plow and tractor are long gone. None of my land has seen a mold board plow in at least 30 years. Don't know of anyone in my neighborhood who still plows. Everything is minimum tillage or no till.

Dad's IH 1066 diesel which was bone stock (no fluid, no weights, TA delete, and no land dual) played with our Oliver semi mount 5/16 back in the 1980's. Dad rented scrub ground that no one else wanted so it was not good easy plowing soil either. That said Oliver plows almost always pulled easier than other brands.

Do not remember model number on the Oliver plow but it was high clearance, could be made 14" or 16" and the rear most bottom could be dropped easily. Original plan when dad bought the plow at auction was to drop the last bottom and use it behind the Oliver 1800A gasser. That 5th bottom never did get dropped and the Oliver 1800A gasser pulled that plow for many years until the 1066 came along. Had to use bushings on the cat2 plow pins to space up to the cat3 arms on the 1066 but no big deal. I think Dad's 1066 would have easily handled a 6/16 Oliver similar plow but it would have needed fluid and possibly some weight added to the tractor to do it (possibly a land dual?). We used what we had lying around so never found out. Most of Dad's tillage equipment was sized more for the Oliver 1800A so the 1066 played with it.
