2 bottom on larger tractor

Without trying and making a mess, can I use a 3pt 2 bottom plow without special setup for wider tractor wheel spacing on a on a Ford 4000 3cyl AG? I have a cedar root issue and subsequent tough plow with 600 Ford and 2B. Hoping for better results with more power....or will I just end up breaking something on the plow?
Thanks, TP

The weakest link in the system will most likely be the one to fail - but you won't know what that is until it happens.

Take Allen's suggestion and use a ripper first.

Where are you and what is "Cedar Root"..?

Have not heard of that here in central Ohio..

Could you spray it to eradicate ..?

Ron.

I have a friend who has been using my 2-16 plow behind his Ford 4600 and he has had no problems doing so

To answer your question... "Yes", you could use a smaller plow than appropriate on your tractor, but you may have to run your right wheel ON the previously plowed ground, to align the plow with the last Furrow..
If you need to plow deeper, a 16" Bottom plow can plow deeper than a 14"..
Off-Setting a small plow might be an interesting project and may not be worth the effort..

Ron..

I know them as eastern red cedars. Grows well in sandy/rocky/less than desirable soil as well as being one of the first to invade unattended soil if stands are nearby. Great for fence posts/cedar closets and chests. Roots are shallow but spread and intertwine to create a "mat" of roots that take years to rot if trees are cut instead of uprooting.
As to the rest of the replies.....my thanks for your time and expertise. Unfortunately, I don't think hiring out is in my budget. My plows are 2-12's so probably not as effective as 16's on the wider stance. But....I am a bit stubborn and may give it a try.
Thanks again.

if you have some roots

be sure your plow has the new kick back feature or find yourself a set of old disc plows.

that is the type of ground old disc plows shined.
roots and rocks, they just roll over them and most time, will kick them out to the top of the ground and keep on going.

(quoted from post at 11:12:00 02/09/15) What about running a subsoiler first to cut thru the roots? I am in a similar situation and no budget.
The disc plow looks awesome, but don't have one and have my doubts it would cut or pull up the larger roots. I'm not familiar with a sub-soiler.....except what I call a potato plow or spade plow and don't have one of those either. I'll just have to try what I have if intent on reclaiming the field.
Thanks,
TP

A Sub-Soiler...maybe with the addition of a Coulter would TEAR up about any roots you have problems with..BUT, it should be capable of Handling 40+ HP and your tractor had better be around 40+ HP, with Good tires and maybe a few weights..
Sub-Soilers help with Drainage, also...
Maybe a "Poor Man's ditching machine..

Entirely depends on make and model of plow. The older 2 bottoms designed for the N series, NAA & 6XX tractors are designed only for a 52" wheel tread. Now the Deere designed for like the 2020 tractors are designed for to be able to be used with a 60" wheel tread. Now I do not know if the 4000SU that had the 28" wheels could be set narrower than the 56" that the 4100 (high utility) with 38" wheels could be set for. We used a 60" tread setting on the 4100 (3 cylinder tractors) pulling 3 bottoms but that type of plow could also have been gotten as a 2 bottom. And size of bottom will not affect your wheel tread. The 600 has a cat 1 hitch so you probably have an older lighter plow now and the 4000 has a cat 2 hitch and does not adjust quite right for cat 1 implements. And the 4000 is a 52 HP tractor against the 600 that is a 32 HP tractor. And I am guessing your plow was designed for a 23 HP N series tractor. So by more than doubling the tractor size in power it would be very easy to spring-bend a lighter plow so it would no longer work on the 600.

Wellmax99,

Can you post a close up picture of the tail wheel assembly. I have that model plow without a tail wheel, and I have a tail wheel off another disk plow. I would like to get the two together. Thanks!

I had 2 acres that had 600 spruce trees. I sold the trees and was
left with 600 holes and all kind s of roots. I had a 65 ford 4000
3cyl gas and a 2-14 plow. did just fine. i will say that it does a
prettier job with a 3-14 but no reason a 2 bottom won't work. I saw
a neighbor pull a 3-16 with a 4430 and that even seemed to work.
my advice is use what you got and get her done!

A 2 bottom will work, just requires the correct hitch that you evidently had. I had both a 65 & 68 4000. The 2 bottom for the 1944 2N Ford would not work at all on those 4000 tractors.
