Looking to buy a NH 411 discbine mower conditioner.. Any advice of things to check while inspecting it before purchase? I dont know much about discbines yet because I have always run a sickle mower conditioner. Any help is appreciated.

Also this is my first post so i dont know how this all works, bear with me!

It's been so long ago, that I'm not positive, but I think that was a 411 that I had for a few weeks. That thing was pure junk. Supposedly two years old when I bought it. It was a trade in on a new Hesston 12 foot hydroswing disc mower/conditioner.
I ran it for about an hour and it was making so much noise I had to park it. I called the dealer,he said bring it back, said they should have checked it over better. There was a bearing out in the shaft that comes down from the main gearbox to the cutterbar, shaft was shot. They had it ten days, got it back,no charge. I cut with it five times, the noise was back so bad that people were coming out their doors to see what all the racket was. I guess the whole cutterbar was shot. They took it back in on a new Hesston conventional, even trade.

I bought a 411 new in 1988 and traded it in 2012. No major issues and will never go back to Haybine, but like any Discbine it is pretty easy to ruin one in a hurry if you aren't careful. The 411 does use a single gearbox (made by Kuhn) for the cutterbar, so if something goes out it can wipe out a lot of parts. There are two metric Allen head magnetic plugs used to check the oil level - one towards each end of the cutterbar on top, partially under the turtles. Take one/both out and see how many metal filings are stuck to the plug. A few fine filings are normal. The other expensive area is the rolls - make sure they aren't starting to lose pieces of the rubber coating.

I had one for probably eight years. it had been traded in on a new one. I never had much trouble with it. I sold it because I was downsizing. Check the oil in the header gearbox for moisture. Any milkiness to the oil could mean a bearring is getting rusty and could fail after a little use. If you get it keep an eye on the ends of the arms that hold the header. The pins and the keepers for the pins can wear and suddenly the blades are hitting the frame.

Very common machine in these parts. Keep oil in the gearbox and
bed and they seem to run a long, long time. Not as good resale as
the 3309/5209 mowers of the same generation.

1411 would be the newer version of same machine.

Thanks for all the help guys, ended up not getting the machine due to some damaged rollers other parts needing major repair.
