I found this and was wondering what the purpose really was? Is it to simply sift grain? Why would you need to sift grain if it is all one type? Is it called a grain sifter or something else, cant find much online.

Thank you
Taylor
Here it Is

It's a fanning mill. It's for cleaning grain. Get's chaff and weed seed out, especially necessary for using grain for seed.

Looks like a Clipper 2B. They work very well for cleaning grain. Screens and some other parts still available from the company. A. T. Ferrell Co. That 2B will work 2 men sacking grain. Very good machines.

What the others said...if you don"t clean the grain of all the trash, it will plug up the grain drill flutes, and the seed won"t flow through to the openers, leaving an unplaned streak in the field til you clean it out. I custom seeded 70 acres for a neighbor once- unfanned oats. NOOO fun!

I assume the grain falls through the holes in the secreen and the chaff blows away? I have a furnace blower and motor that I kept with the idea of trying to make one of these.

Besides cleaning grain for planting it would also work to clean wheat, or rhy to mill your own flower for cooking.

It takes a wide stream of air to do a good job. Plus it has a shaker system, feed adjustment, air flow adjustment, catch trough for the weed seed and needs a auger or elevator to bag the clean seed. A divider that holds 2 sacks is almost a must have.
I bought one 2 years ago for $250 in great shape.
I certainly wouldn't try to build one for myself.
I am going to clean wheat and corn to run through my 20 inch Williams grist mill.
Google Clipper 2B to see lots of info.

That would be a Clipper Fanning Mill.Spent many an hour growing up at one of those. Always cleaned our wheat seed in the fall and the oats seed in the spring , does a great job.

It will do a good job cleaning grains if you get it set right and have the time to tend it. We used one for years. Brother probably sold it as he bought a larger metal cleaner that he gave to our nephew after he quit farming.

The grain is dumped in the hopper with a feed rate "gate" on the bottom to keep from feeding machine to fast. Grain goes though top screen, big stuff like straw falls off. The second screen the small stuff(weed seed basically) goes through and is caught by a tray under screen and dumped out of machine and the grain falls off edge into blower. The various screens are for various sized grain. The blower pushes air across grain removing light material (chaff) the heavy grain fall through out the bottom. The more air the more and heavier material is blown out. Some have elevators or augers to bring clean grain up to bag. This is the same basic process used in mills to clean grain for grinding, just larger and maybe more screenings.
