7000 jd vs. 5100 white

looked at two planters. a john deere 7000 4 rw with yetter row cleaners and a white 5100 8rw with disc openers (look like to small disc wheels facing outward). wanting to go notill beans in corn stalks and corn in bean stubble. like the idea of 8 vs 4 rows but not sure bout them row cleaners if the fingers are better or the disc is better. thoughts?
thanks
Gary

We had a white and was a real good planter not much to wear out in the unit maintain the brushes at the disc. Easy to change to beans with the discs too

I've had trouble with the yetters plugging in corn stalks.A wavey coulter in front of the tru-vees works good. Are the disc's set up like furrow openers?Once you use a 8row it would be hard to go back to a 4.

If I am understanding you right, the White has the disc blade style trash whippers and the Deere has fingers, the fingers are better than the blades. Blades will catch the soil and dig a deep trench. The finger units can too but not as bad. I have Yetters on an IH 800 that were pin adjust and I am guessing that the White are pin adjust as well, there is never a hole that works right. Did some shop work on mine to make them screw adjust and I like them now.

I'm a big fan of JD 7000, never ran a White.

I'd be mighty tempted to buy the White, if the cleaners don't work, $150 a row would fix that.

Only thing is, I hated planting beans in wide rows. 15 inch and 30 inch is fine, but it hated 38 inch.

Could you double back with the 8 row planter and run a 18 inch row that way?

Sorry if I'm derailing your thread with that comment.

White is a good planter what is the parts situation in your area for it. around here it is not good.

The White is a simpler planter seed disc vs finger pickup. the finger pickup can require a lot of maintance other than that they are about the same I have had JD with finger pickup and now have a White 5100 and won't trade it for a JD.

i think the white might be a bit pickier on seed size. I ve never run one, but I have neighbors who do and they seem to be awfully particular on the seed. I think its rounds that plant better in a white? Im sure someone will know, just bringing it up to further the convo a little.

Never run a newer JD but had a 1240 with finger pu. Worked ok, but required a lot of maintainence. Have had a 5100 white for many years now. Basicly idiot proof. planting accuracy varies with the seed size and shape. Not always a picket fence stand but very acceptable. Med rounds seem to work best. Keep the brushes in good shape. I generally pull mine out at the end of the season and wash them. Downside is parts price. Any thing you can get aftermarket is fine, but if you need something only white can supply , watch out. Don't have to buy much until you feel you deserve a ride in the corporate jet.

If you get the White just learn how to select plates and to set the pressure and it will work great, if needed I have all the info needed
