ground speed when disking

Got the JD 310 disk put together. New bearings and 2 new gang axles. Took it out today. Wow, that sucker will plow. My question is probably stupid, but... is there an optimal or maximum ground speed? I know it will differ depending on several variables, but in perfect or near perfect conditions, what speed would be too fast, what speed would be desirable? Thanks.

I try not to go over 6 mph it starts to throw a ridge any faster. Since the M doesn't have a speedo we just watch how much the dirt is thrown

A little slower is better it will cut better but for breaking clods or sod clumps a little faster is better

It depends on your ground, how deep you are disking and how steep the gang angle is. Being the 310 is a heavy, plowing disk (but does have adjustable gang angles) a good place to start is 5 MPH or less. Any more than that and your fields will get wavy in a hurry. If you disk shallower with less gang angle you might be able to go up to 6 but 5 is a very good speed to disk and even slower is better if you can stand to go that slow. If the rear gangs won't pick up the dirt that is thrown out by the front gangs you are going too fast. Mike

Never had a tractor that would go as fast as 5 MPH with a disk. 4 1/2 MPH (4th gear) was top speed for disking and ground had to be perfect for that, Normally 3 1/2 MPH (3rd gear)

With a m9540 4th gear low range is near perfect most of the time bit it will depend on you and what you desire , cutting heavy and as deep as it will go is my preference but others May like slightly angled and a gear faster

(quoted from post at 12:25:01 02/01/15) The Krause disk I had. if you pulled it 5 mph it would leave a huge ridge down the center.

One can pull a JD 310 even faster than 5 mph if it's adjusted correctly without a ridge being formed in the center.

We didn't pay much attention to mph. We looked at the smoothness of the dirt behind the disc and adjusted speed accordingly.

my wd pulling a kewanee 10 footer 2nd gear ,d17 same disc second gear low or high range depending on conditions.
