Hi guys,

I've found a New Idea pull type sickle bar mower locally for sale. The owner says the tag reads PM 74, I assume this is the model number. I wanted to do some research on this mower, but can't find a thing on PM 74. Anyone ever heard of this model or maybe have a manual available? Thanks!

Paul

That could be the "Lot number". They always told me that was more important than the serial number when ordering parts.

I have a manual around here somewhere for a NI sickle mower, pull type. If you find the correct model email me. The manual is for sale. Mower went down the road two years ago.

I have never heard of that model number. Model 30, 30A, 251, and 254 I would think are the most likely possibilities for a New Idea trailer type sickle mower.

If it has another hitch and another PTO hookup out the back so you can hook a crimper to it then more likely a 254. (I think its the 254 the has the aux hitch and aux PTO but the rest of the mower part otherwise similar).

Models 30 and 30A are a little older but otherwise similar minus the out the back PTO shaft. Models 30 or 30A would be by far the most common I would think as far as sheer numbers sold.

I have a model 30A. Pics are posted on this site in the "implement Alley" forum archives. Any of the New Idea sickles were considered some of the best of their era like say 1950's and 1960's. That said, they are pitman stick mowers so you only going to mow with them a few degrees either side of horizontal which is fine for hay fields. If you planning on steep ditch banks or steep pond banks then a pitman drive is not the right type of sickle - you need belt drive or wobble drive that can do the steeper angles compared to a pitman drive.

Parts diagrams for any of these models should be viewable on AGCO parts website for free.

Dad bought a used Mew Idea pull type mower at an auction; it had the thickest cutter bar that I've ever seen. It was so heavy that it wouldn't run over a pile of dirt or gopher mound - it just went right through the mound, kind of like a land leveler.

Maybe the mowers, but the later equipment did,and even on my Uni Harvester, they always told me to use the lot number.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate it!

Buddy,is the model 30 you mention the same as Model 30A? Thanks!

They probably knew what machine you had so could remember the model easly but not remember the lot number, When there were different machines with same model number then you had to have that model as well as the lot number.AS each type of machinery had its own set of lot numbers. The same lot numbers could apply to not only the mowers but also hay rakes or manure spreaders. So if they knew you had the manure spreader and not the hay rake the lot number would tell them the model of the manure spreader, now if they knew you had both a manure spreader and a hay rake then they would have had to ask you the piece and then they could come up with the model number by your lot number.

I think it is just a difference in year. Know on spreaders it is that way with minor differences like type of bearings.

Is model 30 and 30A the same thing? I'm not getting any results when I Google model 30 by itself. Thanks!
