I am thinking about building a small ripper to pull with my cub. Obviously won't be big maybe even one shank, 2 at best. I don't garden much at all so 2 or 3 passes across the ground is not a problem at all. Good idea or bad?

I think the rule of thumb is about 45 hp. per tooth on a ripper. I have a single tooth and its a handful for my 40hp tractor. I have to make two passes sometimes with that at times in my soil. Just an FYI.

Fasthitch or standard Drawbar?
I have a middlebuster I use for potatoes on the fasthitch. You could easily take the plow blade off and put on a shank.
If standard drawbar than you will probably have to build one.
Weather it's on a fasthitch or drawbar it will have to float so as not to cause damage to the tractor when you hit a rock or some other unmovable object.

i made one for my garden tractors, out of a sleeve hitch moldboard plow that was bent. I took off the landslide and moldboard, and replaced them with a boxblade ripper. It can go up to 12" deep, but in clay, I can'tpull it nearly that deep.

I don't know how useful it is in the garden, but it was helpful to make a shallow trench to bury a wire for the stock tank deicer.

I usedsomething like this.

I will be using a standard draw bar is what it would be hooked to. I'm in pretty sandy ground but where the garden is has heavier dirt. Not clay by no means but close to a silt loam.

If standard drawbar you could probably make up a bracket for the drawbar and use the box blade scarifier scank so you could use a pin to adjust it. the drawbar would have to adjust to float and a chain running up to the rockshaft to raise and lower. Weight on the drawbar might also be needed to get some bite to dig it.
Of course the little cub might not do much but scratch up the soil but i quess it's worth a shot.
Another option might just be to get a plow for the cub.

check out this one on ebay.
said it was made for a cub, 100 single bar hitch.

you would have a digger and also a ditcher you could break up the soil.

good to go if you have the standard single bar hitch.

If your goal is to just rough up the ground a little a set of cultivators might work. Some have springs and some manual trip.
