Anyone ever use one of these? Pros? Cons? I am
looking at one and was wondering how they
performed on pen pack (cattle manure) and horse
manure with straw/shaving. Also, any mechanical
shortfalls? Horsepower requirements?

I have a Knight 8014 and like it for slop as it spreads very even, but in pen pack manure it takes forever to unload. Still does a great job just slow.

I consider something like that but went a different direction. Reason: Higher to load, hard to see the back end of spreader when backing into tight spots. Heavy rig when loaded full, I would say a good 100 HP tractor, more tires.

Pros' Haul more make less trips, they spread nice even on cut hay field without clumping.

Just some things that came to mind...

Would have trouble with clumps of frozen or pen packed manure if it wasnt already broken up real good.Hard to keep and even pattern when unloading. Chains with the little "hammers' on the end would break, fun to fix leaning over the side of the spreader. Iif you are on an open tractor and use too much RPM s you get a bath and usually in the coldest part of the year.Really liquid manure will slop over the sides if the path or road to field wasnt smooth and we had to go up drive a foot or two ,cross road down thru ditch and then into field and try not to slop it on roadway. Its better than nothing.Dont load to level full and you should be ok.I would use one for lots of sloppy feeding floor manure if you cant find a rear discharge with a slop gate.We used a 670 MM gasser to pull it and was fine about 70 hp if i recall right.THere was two of them around our community, both Hawkbilts if i recall correctly.

A pro is that with the front discharge the load stays on your tractor instead of lifting your drawbar towards the end of the load, reducing traction, as with a rear unload.

Different kind of spreader. You had a flail spreader. This one is a side discharge with an auger in the bottom that pulls the manure to the front impellers.
