For some reason I could not reply to your post about your new 540. I have one and I love it. Mine has hyd tie though. I run mine on a John Deere 2510 diesel. I start a bale going in 2nd gear then after the core starts and I go about 30 feet I drop it down into 5th to finish the bale. I can do that on most of the ground that I bale. There are a few hills I have to shift down to 4th. I can make good tight bales in pretty much any type of conditions. It will bale light fluffy stuff to heavier hay. I have done about 850 plus bales a year with it the last few years. I keep the chains lubed, baler greased and it just runs. I have only sheared the shear bolt once and had one bearing go bad. Check the belt guides in the front of the baler they can wear. The only thing that I wish mine had were the optional bale ramps on the back of the baler. I bale fescue, orchard, orchard alfalfa, and clover grass mied with it.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I'l be running the baler with a Ford 4830, 8x2 trans, and was rated at 62 pto hp new. It's still pretty stout as I run a NH 616 8ft disc mower in 6th gear most of the time and the tractor handles it just fine. There's a couple of hills that I gear down to 5th, but not very often. Most people say the 540 baler is a lot more machine than the little 530. I'm hoping to be able to bale in 4th or 5th gear, with exception to maybe starting a roll. To start with I'll probably only be rolling 200 to 300 rolls a year. Still going to square baling some for the horse people. I bale a lot of different material, but a lot of orchard grass and fescue, some clover, and a little timothy. Later cuttings can be weedy at times. I'm ordering an owners manual this weekend. Hope to actually get the baler either this weekend or early next week. Am I correct in saying that's it's a non adjustable hydraulic density control on the baler?
