Help - New Idea 329 Super Sheller

We have a New Idea 329 Super Sheller that breaks the drive chain and/or sprocket driving the throw out mechanism every time we start picking/shelling. The throw out mechanism runs the cross auger feeding cleaned corn to the auger going to the wagon. The throw out mechamism also runs the auger going to the wagon.

We have replaced the bottom bearing on the wagon auger, and both bearings on the shaft with the cross auger and throw out mechanism. We still have the issue.

The whole machine runs great when not loaded. Once we hit the corn rows we don't get 100 ft before we break the chain or sprocket.

There is another shaft that runs a gear box running the wagon auger. We have not replaced that bearing or dis-assembled the gear box yet, they turn nicely by hand. Regardless, we will be dis-assembling this next.

Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this? It's a simple mechanism, works well when not loaded but brakes the drive chain and/or sprocket when loaded while picking. We are pulling our hair out trying to solve this. Thanks, Paul

It has to be some issue beyond a bearing......look for something else causing the breakage. Isn"t there a slip clutch in the system...maybe frozen/rusted solid. Bad bearings don"t break major components, twice.

I've never been around a sheller version.

Do they have a big auger, is the fighting loose or bent over in the auger? That would run empty, but jam up with corn in it?

Don't know the machine but have had other chain drives and two things come to mind. Are either the chains or sprockets rather worn, and particularly if so, are the chains adjusted too tight? Also are you certain the chains are CORRECT pitch?

Wish my father in law was still living. He worked at New Idea and had one of those and let me borrow it, never had a problem.

Have you been able to get corn out the spout? If not check the top of the wagon auger.Birds were building nests in the area of that little blower at the top every year when I had mine.Could be restricting the flow enough to spin the slip clutch but if it were seized....

had the bearing on the bottom of the shaft going to the wagon crap out on one once. Tore the mounting loose and it needed to be rewelded to the tube if I remember correctly.
Would tear up the chain driving the auger and if it did run for a bit the corn would fall out from the bearing not being where it should be.
