Chisel plow

I am looking at different chisel plows. One is an IH. there is a rod that lifts it from the tube at the top of the frame to the arm for the wheels. It just looks like it would be a problem with bending during lifting or transporting from field to field.
Does any body know of a problem with them?
We have one without discs on the front. Think we would like one with discs for wheat stubble or on cornstalks.
The one we have is a 1600 Deere. It has been a good machine just getting old and seems like it wads and gobs in sod/wheat stubble and leaves a lot on top in corn stalks to plug up things in the spring.

If its an older plow and that rod has not been bent, there is a pretty good chance you wont have any trouble with it either.Usually it is abuse that bends things like that.

That rod is in tension meaning it is PULLING the lift linkage. So it would not have any bending forces on it.

I don't see how it can be in tension since that is the mechanism that does the lifting when you raise it up it would be in compression.

What model, I'm not so familiar with IH chisels?

Only thing is every one I've seen on auction in the 6500 series has a shank broke off. Finally saw a nice one a year ago all shanks there; auctioneer announces the owner even replaced the 3 broken shanks..... Makes me wonder.

I have one and I think its a 560 or 650 Vibra-Chisel with field cuiltavator sweeps on it. I have never had any problems with it and it seams to be a tough machine. This one dose a good job not plugging in heavy soybean stubble, I tried it in corn stocks after a disk and it did ok but not the best. Maybe 2 passes with a disk would have done better. Bandit

One was a 6000. I can see where the shanks could break. We have broken a couple on the 1600 Deere we have.
I was looking on another site at a couple of 6500's I like them since I could change the disc depth from the seat while going.
I am just in the looking stage right now. Kind of a perpetual shopper.

Glencoe built a tough chisel plow with the Giant C model. Had one since 1980 and have broken only one shank, and that was by backing over a rock. For a disc chisel, I like my White 435.....front disc gang can be raised/lowered hydraulically on the go. I had a Glencoe Soil Saver, but I like the individually sprung discs on the White much better.

I believe they had a the 55 which was mounted, 5500, 6000, 6500 were all disc chisels. For their time, they were tough. The 6000 / 6500 were much heavier than the 5500. Never had any issues. Like another said, if it does show serious wear issues now, then that is a good sign.
