Power needed to pull a 3-16 slat wing plow

I ran across a 3 bottom slat wing plow for 3 pt hitch advertised for about $300. It has no coulters, though from the pic it appears to be in fair shape. My question is two part: (1) Does a Ford 4100 diesel have the power to pull this? and (2) Is this a good price for the plow, and is the lack of coulters a deal breaker? The plow would be used in 2 to 3 acres of never plowed, large rock free, and generally heavy bottom land soil that has some small debris from trees.

Thanks in advance for any input or advice and sorry if I posted in the wrong forum.

Growing up we had a 3-16 slat plow on the WD45....40+ hp. That price is typical for around here. The plow pictured was concurrent with the D series AC tractors. (slanted standards)

I also noticed that one of the slats on the lead plows' moldboard is broken off / missing and I assume that matching replacement parts would probably be next to impossible to find. Is this design known for being fragile or prone to breakage?

I have 1 similar to that pulled easily with wd45. Mine has a broken slat on the front bottom as well, it works ok that way.

Jim,
That plow can be pulled with a 45 hp tractor quite easily.

If you have land with tree debris (roots, etc) you might need a heavier built plow than the one shown. Slat moldboards usually work well in heavy soils (that's why they were built). A plow with no coulters and a broken moldboard might signify a plow that was used and abused. If you are the kind of person who values a good looking plowed field then I suggest you do need coulters; if not, then it's a moot point.

If you need or want coulters (just finding them might be difficult) and add that to the plow price then $100 is enough for this plow, maybe $200 tops.

The slat plows were not used in my area but heavy clay ground I would want 60 horse for it and would not have a plow without coulters. Could not give me one to use without them, And a parts yard wants $40 and up for coulters, the type for that plow I think would be in the 60-70 range. I had a 4100 Ford, the 4000 with the 38" rear wheels and at 52 horse would not have wanted any more than the 3-14" I had. Also had a second 4100 but it was bored oversize and put out 60 horse on dyno and had a different plow for it that was 3-16" but the bottoms were only 14" bottoms and that was all I would put behind the one with 60 hp. You should be able to drop the rear bottom on that plow and use as a 2 bottom with that tractor OK for that amount of land. And remember that Ford is a cat 2 hitch tractor. Would your ground be sticky and not want to scour the moldboards? that is what that bottom is designed for. Unless you have the stickey soil then I myself would pass and find a better plow with coulters in the 2 bottom size.

A slat will pull easier than a solid moldboard. As far as coulters,no big deal.Definitely not a deal breaker. Here,Nobody uses colters(me included). They have little to no value.A few years ago I hauled some good ones to a sale. Did not even get one bid. Hauled them to scrap.

when i was a kid, we pulled 3 bottoms with a ford 3000... sometimes had to drop a bottom off it if it was wet, but slats do pull easier than regular bottoms

Thanks to all that have responded and provided some much needed insight. The portion of the land that would be plowed is root free and the majority of debris encountered would generally be fallen walnuts and other small tree particles. The soil is heavy dark that tends to consistently retain a high moisture content.

My theory is that the friction reduction from using slat wing moldboards in this soil type would allow using an additional bottom on the plow for this tractor.

This 2-16 plow with coulters is another option. He thinks its worth even more, but I don't see it.
I am in Alabama and am now wondering if maybe a disk setup would be viable. This land has not been plowed in the last 50 years if ever.

Thanks again,
Jim

Do notgo with that 2 bottom as it has no longer avaible parts and is also only for a cat 1 hitch like a NAA. If the rest of that slat plow is good drop 1 bottom for what you want and find coulters.

That 2 bottom plow is designed for a 52" wheel tread like the N series Ford to the 600 series or the TO series Fergusons had and with a cat 1 hitch. Your 4100 Ford would have a cat 2 hitch and you need a wheel tread of 60" with that tractor, I think it will adjust down to 56" but that is too narrow for safty with that tractor. The 2 bottom is 30? years older than the slat bottom and when that style of plow the slat bottom is in that size they were 99% cat 2 hitch and made for that 60" wheel tread. That is center to center of rear wheels. And the slat bottom should have the blade or throwaway type of share that you can get for any make and make them to fit. I think that it is a short line reginal maker and not a mager brand so other parts might be hard to find, you might have to make them. And without a tail furrow wheel most plows would have a long landside on the back bottom instead of the short one like the front and middle bottoms have, might be something to check into on it. Check parts avaiblity for it.
