New Holland Plunger Bushing Material????

Ordered and received a couple of plunger bushings for my NH68, but to my surprise, they are steel, not bronze.

Does this sound right?

Part number is 34574 and according to Parts Springs' web site, these bushings were used on New Holland baler models 68, 273, 166, S67, 272, 277, 270, 276, S68, 275, 268, S66, 271, S69, 269, TR70.

Mine came from the New Holland dealer in a CNH box.

Anyone changed out these bushings and if so, were they steel or bronze or something else?

Thanks!
Bill

They are hardend steel(harder than 'normal' steel) to last longer. They go in the 'pitman',right? The pin is bolted solid to the plunger. You havent dissasembled it yet?Tear it apart and find out.I'll bet they are right.....

Have yet to replace the bushings at the plunger end on my baler, but I did put a new bushing in the plunger at the pitman end in my New Holland 65 this spring.

That bushing was brass (or possibly bronze) and I used factory CNH parts.

Have you replaced or are you going to replace the bearing on the crank end of the plunger rod? I need to replace that bearing on my 68, It's NH# 240953 and it's back ordered at the Dealer for a couple months now, talked to him again yesterday and he said it's ordered but has no idea if he will ever get one. The # on the original bearing is Fafnir RA108PPBZ, it's an oddball, can't find one anyplace, searched the net, it has to have the Z on the end. On your bushing question, if they fit, use them, I have seen steel bushings before.

Did you ever get the knife off the plunger? I rebuilt mine about 30,000 bales ago,(except for the crank bearing) I never did get the bolts out, just put a fine edge on the knife in place and put it back in. I have been getting by with just keeping the shear bar sharp and adjusted fairly tight, about 5 thou. clearance, still makes a nice bale.

240953 shows in stock at 31 New Holland dealerships in the US according to the dealer parts locator. This includes Wilding Implement in your state of Minnesota. Have your local parts guy learn how to use the parts locator.

That is correct - it is the joint at the plunger end vs the crank. I haven't taken it apart yet, but will do so shortly - I hope!

Thanks,
Bill

I was able to cross that bearing over to an bearing from NAPA, which I believe is a SKF. It's about 20 miles from my house, it you need the number, I'll get it and post tone number. My dealer could still order it though. I think the NAPA dealer's price was a little cheaper than NH, but mostly I got it there because the dealer is about 40 miles away.

Thanks,
Bill

The knife is not off -yet. I just haven't had time to revisit it. I ordered some replacement counter sunk screws for it and a few shims too. Also got new jack screws for the wood slide vertical adjustments too.

Thanks,
Bill

I got one from NAPA also, we have a great store that I use a lot, but the outside diameter is wrong and we could not come up with the proper size. The one I got was # RA107RRB, what # did your store come up with? The Fafnir # RA108PPBZ does not cross.

Thank you for that information, I was starting to get a little concerned. the old 68 is my second or spare baler but I like to keep it ready to go, some days we use two.

The baler and parts are about 20 miles from my house. Next time I'm out there, I'll take a look-see.

Thanks,
Bill

On those frozen bolts I always take a punch and screw them out with it or at least loosen them up and then put the allen wrench in and take them out and throw them away
