Fanning mills

What should I be looking for when looking at fanning mills at auctions and other online sites? I'm looking into growing and cleaning different varieties of antique and old public varieties of wheat and other small grains to resell as seed after germination and purity testing by outside labs.

See what variety of screens come with it, and the condition of their frames. Probably easier to rebuild frames than find the right screen material. Some, very few, have bagging attachments, which may have an advantage for you. Haven"t used one since the 60s, and that was shovel in/out. I bought one on auction for nostalgia, cost a buck. Had a bunch of good screens. Some on craigslist are believed to be worth hundreds!

Somehow one of the old wooden fanning mills ended up as decor in a motel lobby in Reno, Nevada. I pointed out to the guy at the front desk that it only had the bottom screen and was missing the top screen - but he didn't even know what I was talking about.

My brother bought a fairly large unit with a steel frame and elevator. He gave it to our nephew when he retired. I don't know what happened to the old wooden one.

Depending on where you are we have one that still works just fine. I am in Missouri

My grandfather sold certified seed for years and it all went through an old Clipper fanning mill which my uncle still has I know it did a great job on wheat and clover But I have to say I don't miss stacking all those sacks in the granary.

I have a 2B Clipper. You can purchase new screens and the belt that drives the fan from AT Ferrell.

I use an 4 inch auger to fill the hopper as it reduces the amount of shoveling. The top screen is the scalper and the bottom screen is the sifter. The top screen allows the "good" stuff to fall through on to the bottom screen. The "good stuff" stays on the bottom screen until it shakes off of the front edge where it falls through the air blast from the fan. The cleaned seed then falls to the bottom of the fanning mill where you get to scoop it into sacks or other containers.

Are you going to have malting Barley seed? I am looking for some to grow a bit of Barley for beer.

I have a 2B with the bagging elevator. Paint is almost like new. Also have a 2B Metal fanning mill. It needs to be rebuilt (project) and has the screen cleaner that moves back and for to keep the screen clean. Don't think that one has the bagger elevator. They are sitting up in a loft of my machine shed collecting dust till I get time to rebuild the metal one. Have a lot of screens.

Screen material is easy right from factory, also complete screen with frame. Just this fall checked on it. Good ones with several screens seem to be in demand going for over a hundred.

Hey OLD...what's going on in Ferguson..??

Expecting a Race Riot or a Cop Free-For-All..?

Sounds like they better shape up, out there...maybe it's about time....

I'm in the Peoria, IL area (20 miles west). In my looking around at them online there were a lot of nice ones made with hardwood and nice paint jobs and pin striping. There were also a lot of good machines made with soft wood that were cheaper but worked good. There may still be one in the granary at the family farm, I'm going to call my uncle or just go there when we're up for Christmas. My uncle isn't going to use it anytime soon if ever.

Otherwise it seems like the best place to fine one is going to be watching farm auctions and hope to find one with a variety of screens at a minimum. Bagging elevator eliminates a lot of shovel work.

The other thing I talked about with the guy from the Extension was growing dry beans. Lots of varieties of dry beans that aren't available in stores or farmers markets. I can set up my all crop for harvesting dry beans and use the fanning mill for getting rid of the remaining chaff, stems, etc.

From A T Farrel, makers of the Clipper cleaner they have screens avaible for over a hundred different crops. Located in Bluffton, In.
