John Deere lister

I have a J.D. 590 series horse drawn trench guide lister I know what the purpose of a lister planter is but do not know about the trench guide part. Does anyone know. Thanks.

This used to be Lister country but I have no idea of the trench guide part. Could it be a marker of some sort. Pics would be great.

I know they used to use them to get the seed down to the moisture and it helped with weed control. Why did they quit using them? :?:

They used to list the field before planting, so you already had rows made. Then when planting time came they broke out the middles with the lister planter. The guide just followed in one of the furrows that were previously made. No need for markers then!
