New Idea 327 husking bed

If you ever have a bearing go out in a husking roll on one of those things, haul it to the scrapper.
Been working on one all afternoon. Got the roll back in but it'll take half a day to put all the sheet metal back on. They must have built the whole picker around that one bearing. It was at the top end of the roll, just to make matters ten times worse. Why in the world they went to sealed bearings in those instead of staying with greasable bearings like the 8 roll beds had I'll never know.

You had me scared when I first started reading but then I seen that was only on the 12 roll beds. I feel better now knowing that my new idea I just traded for has the 8 roll bed.

I think those just use brass bushings. As long as you keep those greased,it should last forever. These things get silk wrapped up,it holds moisture and the seals rust out.
This one went on the first round in the first field. I got all the way to the back and half way across the back headland and it seized right up. They run in groups of four. It was in the back cluster,so I took the chain off that runs them and came on around with just eight rolls running.
I've got another picker in the shed with an eight roll bed. If I'd have been half done or something,I'd have just gotten that one out and finished with it,but I didn't figure I'd better use it for all of my corn right from the start. It's got a lot of miles on it. If that cold front was already here,I would have just pulled the pin on the 12 and parked it.

I had a two row mounted with the 12 roll bed and when the first bearing went out and I replaced it I drill a 1/8 inch hole in the seal on all the bearings and used a needle to grease the bearing. After I was done I put a dob of silicone in the hole to keep the dirt out. I only greased them about twice during the season. 100 acres of corn at the most.
