danuser post hole digger rpm

I just shucked the ring gear and pinion out of my f8 digger. I have it on an 80 horse tractor and I run at complete idle. A friend told me to run it faster and there will be less stress on it . What's everyone else think ? Btw 16" × 5' auger. Thanks deluxe.

I would try to make a shear bolt or similar system if your digger is not equipped with one. Those soft bolts are a pain but a lot cheaper than what your about to fix

There is no shear pin on slip clutch of any kind. The pto yoke goes onto a splined input shaft. I agree a shear bolt would be kinda handy.

Hard to believe the old digger did not have a shear bolt on the drive shaft. If any tool needs a shear bolt it's an old digger.

I took my green line 5000 phd drive shaft apart insuring it was free to spin on the gearbox shaft.

Also insured the shear bolt was a soft bolt, keep a few extra in the tool box.

I also took the auger loose from the gearbox output shaft and replaced the attachment bolts with soft bolts.

F-8's use a shear bolt connecting the gearbox output to the auger. Yours is either the wrong spec bolt, rusted fast, or both.

Danuser F8 parts catalog states there should be a "special shear bolt"
.

Here's the gearbox parts listing.

When I got my old green line 5000 digger,

I had to take the bolts out of the gearbox output shaft, that attach the auger. After Days of applying lube to this connection.

I took the digger out into the field and had to dig about four holes before the connection of the out put shaft and auger shaft finally broke loose.

Once it was all loose I applied anti freeze to all connection points.

Once your neighbors find out you have a post hole digger, you will have a bunch of new best friends. That is why you need those soft shear bolts in place.

Was there any oil in it..?

Would it be batter to use a Slip Clutch on a Post Hole Digger..?

Seems like a good idee..!!

Ron.

The F8 gearbox takes 3 lbs of an EP (extreme pressure rated) good quality gun grease. Oil will work but it will leak because they are grease seals and not oil seals.
When it comes to shear bolts, you should use grade 2 or 5. The shear bolt is the one that connects auger to the gearbox. Where the PTO connects to the gearbox is a splined yoke to the splined pinion (input) gear then secured with a roll pin (current design) or a castle nut (older style).

It does sound like a Slip Clutch in the PTO shaft would loose less time over replacing shear-pins/shear Bolts.

Ron,
With our testing of slip clutches we weren't overly impressed. What we found was when the digging got tougher it would start to slip and was almost impossible to dig a hole . We found you could be more productive with shear bolts.

(quoted from post at 19:11:22 10/31/14) IMHO PHD were designed to dig at about 1000 engine rpm's. I guess the digger had too hard a shear bolt or auger was rusted to the output shaft.

had that happen here. The pto yoke rusted tight to the input shaft.

I have one of those green line diggers. I use gr5 shear bolts. The grade 3s turn to peanut butter the you have the broken piece to punch out of the hole. The grade 5s break off clean.
