I'm looking to see if anyone can tell me if a new Holland BR730 can bale silage with a 35 to 40hp tractor or should i be looking more towards a JD385 with silage kit thanks

i have baled hay in 6 inches of standing water with a john deere 535 but i dont thimk i would want to bale much wet hay without a silage baler designed for it

Depends if the 730 has the high moisture kit, but just doing a few bales shouldn't be too big of an issue.

I run the older 630 minus silage kit, machine will run on 35 PTO HP according to the book, I run on 42 easy enough (in hay) The challenge with silage bales and low HP will be once the chamber is full and going up hill. You will need to gear down or make smaller bales.

No comment on the 385, but if you can't run a 730, you won't be running many other balers.

According to the specs thats a3x4 baler and needs at least 40 PTO HP to run, plus it weighs 3K before you get the bale made. I have a baler that supposed to take 28 PTO HP to run, but it works the living snot out of a 35 hp tractor doing it and you have to go real slow. I'd want more HP myself.
