Allis Chalmers small square baler

I deliver mail as a substitute. Last Saturday I delivered a package to a house that sat off the road....never been there before. Parked in a shed next to his house was an Allis Chalmers small square baler. I'm 65 yers old and had NEVER seen one made by Allis. This thing was built like a tank!! It looked to be functional and was in good shape. Have I led a sheltered life or were these common back in the day?

AC got into square balers late in the game. They made a model 303 and maybe one other. Not real common.

We had a good AC dealer that sold a few of them in this area. The owners seemed to like them. They sure did stand out in an area where NH and JD sold 99% of the balers.

The 303 and 302 were the second run of AC square baler, followed by the 442, 443 and 444 models. production ended in the mid to late 70's if I remember right. I still use one and know of two or three in a couple of local salvage yards.

Or was it Wales? We had an Allis-Chalmers 300 baler bought new in The 1960's which was actually built by Jones Balers in Wales. It was a very good baler ( if a little slow compared with The Claas we had at the same time) But there was a heck of a lot more metal in it than say a NH or MF of the same vintage. One of its features ( Or was it a quirk?) of the baler was that unlike say an International baler the twine was laid in [b:8fb6b1430d]very[/b:8fb6b1430d] deep grooves in the bale (In fact if you were handling the bales when it began to get dark it was quite a job to find the twine with your fingers! ) A-C actually bought Jones Balers out to gain access to some of their excellent designs.

The crates that they came in were stenceled Engand but can't remember if there was a town name on them. The final assembly was done at the Laporte works LaPorte,Indiana. My dad worked there and brought home the lumber from crates and studed his new home with the lumber from crates.
