dropping a bottom off a 720 IH plow

I plan on dropping a bottom off of our 5-18 #720 plow. I know the correct way would be drop the back bottom & move the tail wheel forward. BUT, time to get the plowing done is running short, and I only have 5 acres of corn stubble to plow. AND, the moldboard snapped off of the front bottom when I plowed with it 2 years ago (never got back around to fixing it yet.)

SO, would it work OK for now to just drop the front bottom off? The hitch adjustment between the 3pt. arms is currently set so the plow is all the way toward the left side of the tractor. Looks like I could loosen those bolts and move it about 16" to the right, which should put the 2nd bottom pretty close to where the 1st bottom tracks now, in relation to the right rear tire.

I'll set it up correctly next year, just need it to work for a few hours of plowing now. 5-18's are just too much for our 1100 (94hp) in heavy black soil, can't run fast enough to turn over the dirt very well.

I attached a few pictures of the plow from when I used it in 2012 (before the front moldboard busted off.)

I would try it. The cold weather will be here before you know it. Nice looking black soil. Do you plant a cover crop? I planted barley on my garden, its about 8 inches high now. I probably will mow it off before plowing. Hal

Back in the 1960's and 1970's I had a Viking garden tractor and 5 or 6 Standard Twins. I bought parts from American Farm Machinery in New York Mills & Ottertail MN. Hal

You will totally screw up the line of draft, and it will dogtrack bad and not roll over the furrows. If you have the broken peice off the moldboard, weld it back on and finish up. If you don't have the broken peice, I would crowd the plowed ground real heavy, and set the lift link on the RH 3pt hitch arm longer. Croweding the plowed ground or moving the hitch will both leave a crappy looking job, but I won't be able to see it from my house, so what ever you do, you will have to deal with it. I've seen a few guys plow around here, and their job looked like the were short a bottom of having a complete plow, if you know what I mean.

Could have had it half done correctly while waiting for answers here.

If you have no pride in your work, have at it your way.

saw a guy plowing with an Oliver 1600 with the front bottom removed from a 4-16. slid over like you are talking about. did a nice job of plowing, just looked a little funny

Many usable four and five bottom semi-mount plows don't sell for much more than scrap value. Would it cost very much to rent or buy a less than ideal, but usable plow to finish this years fall plowing before the weather turns bad? You could fix your good plow this winter and then sell/scrap the temporary plow.

We've got an Oliver 565 3 bottom plow that is a4 bottom backbone. Designed to be able to remove the front bottom. Later on they made a 3 bottom backbone 565 but I've never seen one.
