bolts per pound

Does any body have a chart that lists the number of bolts per pound of both hex head and carriage head bolts in standard thread. Would help figuring cost per bolt when you are buying bolts per pound like at TSC or Rual King. Just bought about 60 pounds today and Rual King had on sale for $1.49 per pound, regular $1.69 per pound and TSC price today was $2.19 per pound for same quality bolt. That is a big chunk of change different on that amount. I tried looking it up but everything but what I wanted. Was thinking about wrighting all the count information down when I was in store but forgot. And when you are doing things for others best to know what your cost is.

So you are worried about counting every penny of a job and willing to rely on some type of guesstimation calculator or something like that? I'm not trying to criticize your idea but if you are that worried about it then you need to count every bolt or at least put enough on a scale to equal 1lb and count them .

Seriously unless you are dealing with large bolts with low quantity per pound you could always just add a flat fee or lets say something like $4 misc to the ticket. $4 would more than double the cost of 1 full pound of bolts. Sell each bolt for $.50 or something. Mark it up a little more if you think you need more profit for wasting fuel and time to go shopping for hardware.

Just would like to be able to give them an idea of the expences. When something takes a hundred bolts that is a different figure than just a few bolts. This manure spreader I am now working on will take probably around 200 bolts till I am done. But on those 200 bolts what is the cost of them when you buy that many in bulk for several projects. I think it will come out to around 6-8 pound but Would just like to justify things to them as to my expences and then they will give me whatever they feel like. Think only 24 bolts that will not be new. And I am doing this job more as a favor than a profit so what they pay me just has to cover ny expences. A different job that I just did going to TSC one bolt cost about 90 cents and that was at the $2.19 per pound while at the local hardware that bolt was marked on shelf $4.70. Would you like to pay that difference.

If you are buying that many bolts did you consider and industrial supply like Fastenal? Usually for large quantities they are cheaper than any retail location.

Actually I think they would be higher priced and would have to order and wait on them.

Last manure spreader I redid
Fastenal had all bolts in stock
and were considerably cheaper.
They can also provide retail
pricing on commercial accounts.

Leroy, our local Rural King has the piece per pound info listed on each tag in their bolt bins. I don't know how accurate it is - never bothered to check.

My local TSCs and farm stores have a scale in the bolt section. I can weigh my bolts before hand so I have an idea what the charge will be.
I like to know what to expect before I cash out and make a purchase.

I can use a scales here at home and pile on bolts till I get to a pound and then count them as long as I have that particular size on hand but when I do not have that size on hand to do that but when I can count the number of bolts I need for a job that does not tell me how many pounds I need to buy. For instance on a single hay rake (and I have 4 setting here right now wating rebuilding) it takes 64 carriage bolts for the teath of 3/8 x 2 1/2", 16 hex head bolts of 3/8 x 3/4, 25 1/2 inch nuts, 89 3/8 nuts, 80 3/8 lock washers, 25 1/2 lock washers. Then there are several other bolts as well that have to be replaced. So without some kind of chart to tell me how many are in a pound how do I know how many pounds to buy? A pain to set in the store and count every piece.

You have to remember to do that and wright it down when you are in the store, I forgot to do that when I got done shopping but I am 50 mile away from store so return trip to do just that is out of question. Both Rual King and TSC have that listed. But TSC does not carry a lot of the sizes that I need and Rual King does and are 3/4 the price.

When I needed a bunch of machinery washers or bushings as some call them I checked there web site, only one of a dozen stores listed had them in stock, And then only a part of what I needed. When I got there, way out of my way for anything else, they said they only had them because of a fluck. Could order them and wait a week and pay more in shipping than the cost of the washers. After that I found out that Mennards and Rual King carry them in stock. So why would I mess with a company that is like that and the ones I did get were just as high priced as the other stores. When you need something in middle of work and it would set you back a week and then pay more for shipping than it costs to drive to a store that has the part why would you even want to bother with them? If the item is not avaible elseware when you need it, then it is different. Local hardware stores do not carry them. Checking the bolt prices they were just as high priced as Lowe's were where my wife works and the trip just makes them not into consideration. And Lowe's prices are over 5 times Ruak kings prices.

I had checked there site and if you even new how to answer (tecnical )to there questions how long would it take to figure out things for a hundred or more bolt sizes. Less time to drive up 50 mile one way to store and copy all figures down and that is what I had forgotten to do when I was in the store. I had tried to do it before but was in is 3 x 5 note book that got lost.

Hey Leroy - Try looking more carefully at the bins at your TSC. If they're like ours here, there's a number right on the bin that tells you how many of that bolt there are in a pound.

The tsc's around here seem pretty cookie-cutter, I can't imagine they're much different across the country either.

Of course, I suppose it depends on the store's supplier as to how much each weighs. I'd guess larger bolts really doesn't matter much, they'd all be pretty similar. But small bolts, even a tiny difference in weight of each one could add up to a lot of bolts per pound.

I did not want to go back to a store and spend the time trying to wright down the count on a hundred or more different sizes. Lets see how many different counts that would be. 1/4" diameter from 12" long to 4 1/2", 5/16" from 3/4" lonmg to 5', 3/8" from 3/4" to 6", 7/16" from 1" to 6", 1/2" from 1" to 8", 5/8" to 8" and both hex head and carriage bolt heads plus both flat and lock washers. That would take over an hour just to wright down the figures. Then throw in lag bolts. And then TSC does not carry the 7/16" size that I use a lot of but Rual King does. Have 5 TSC stores in about 18 to 27 mile from me but they are mostly usless for any thing. Then there is one about 35 mile that is out in the country and it is better but something as simple as a plow bolt the closer ones do not carry coperate is wanting the better store to get rid of. Then there is Rual King that has half again as many size bolts about 50 mile from me but they are also dropping the ag Items they had, then there is anouther TSC a half mile farther up the road fron RK. Then there is anouther RK about 60 mile from me that I go past every once in a while but have yet to stop in. I did find a chart just for flat washers, would be nice to find one for all the fasteners.
