Trip Arm Question - New Holland Baler

I received some parts today for my NH68 baler among them was a new trip arm and replacement serrated disc.

The present disc on my baler, the serrations are so worn that they resemble pencil indentations on a piece of paper. The trip arm looks the same.

Question is - would/should the trip arm have serrations like the disc? I would think yes - so they can mesh together like a set of gears, else there could be some slippage resulting in erratic length bales. Problem is, the new trip arm doesn't have any serrations, it is smooth.

I think I saw on a new New Holland baler this summer, both the disc and trip arm had serrations - buy more aggressive.

Thanks!

Kinda depends on the baler. Some do,some dont.My older NHs were smooth. My CIH inline has serations.I'd run what they sent you and not worry.

The 68 is supposed to have teeth on the arm too. I had to grind on mine and cut new teeth with a threading file this spring. Works great now.

The key thing is to see if the arm is worn. If it is, you can build it back up flat with weld and grind it down smooth so it maintains firm pressure on the disk. Teeth are not really necessary.

Thanks! I looked at the trip arm again tonight and it's part
number. I thought I might have got the wrong part, but the
parts list shows the one I got to be correct.

I'm wondering if the wheel is hardened (IMHO it should be)
steel and the trip arm isn't and over time, the wheel would cut
grooves in it.

On another note, picked up a used 48 inch bale chute
extension for cheap today. We get out hay rack rebuilt and life
is going to get a little easier for loading bales!

Thanks,
Bill

Disc is of hard steel and has serrations. The trip arm is of softer steel and does not. The theory seems to be that the disc will dig into the softer steel of the arm and move it. Arm is spring loaded and keeps pressure on the disc. I have welded up a worn arm and it worked fine afterwards. I second the post that said run what NH sent you and don't worry about it.
