Belly mower versus 3-pt. finish mower HP requirements

I see Farmall C's on Ebay with 6 ft. belly mowers on them. Would a 6 ft. finish mower require more horsepower? I know a 6 ft. brush hog type rotary mower would be too large for the tractor.

The <a href="http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/2/8/287-farmall-c.html">Farmall C</a> should have about 20HP.

We have three Bush Hog 720 finishing mowers.

We use a <a href="http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/0/2/25-john-deere-a.html">1952 Model A (38HP)</a> to power one of them.

It is recommended that a <a href="http://www.manualslib.com/manual/23247/Bush-Hog-Tough-Fth-600.html">20-40HP range tractor</a> be used.

The Bush Hog 720 was too much for "Audie" our 54 <a href="http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/0/3/38-john-deere-40.html">Model 40S (21HP)</a>, but the 600 is just right.

We also have a Bug Hog 600 on <a href="http://youtu.be/iTZ_XaSVtfI?list=PLCUEeGboEbi-pR6w2onO-9zclH9sBoDVu">"Sparky" our 51M</a>.

Hope this helps.

We have a 5 foot woods mower on a C and it's about all it wants, but maybe in lighter grass it would handle a 6 foot. A newer H should handle a 6 foot quite well. I like a belly mower for careful mowing, you don't get tail swing.

I figured the 6 ft. would be a little large for the Farmall C. Do you have your 5 ft. belly mower offset to one side so that you can mow closer to stuff? Pretty sure the tractor is wider than 5 ft. A Farmall H seems pretty big to mow around the house with.

I have an allischalmers CA . About the same size and horsepower as a farmall C. I use it to mow about 10 acres a week with a Woods 6 ft belly mower. It mows up to 10 inches of grass without a problem. I don't run out of power but over 10 inches the grass won't clear out fast enough and it bunches up and won't cut. I also have a 6 foot farm king 3pt fining mower. On the same CA it mows about 10 inches of grass before I run out of power. The biggest problem with the 3pt mower is you need more tractor to lift it and still remain stable. I put the same 3pt mower on the WD45 it still can't cut more than 10 inches of grass with more than twice the horsepower when the grass gets to heavy to clear I just break the belt instead of running out of power. But the larger tractor can lift the mower and still remain stable.

Thanks for the response. It doesn't seem to me that a person could do a very good job using a mower narrower than the tractor. That's why I thought I needed a 6 ft. mower.
