Melroe Drills

Going next week to look at a 16' (2 8's pulled together) Melroe hoe drill. Steel Packer wheels.

Anything particular to know or look for. I understand they are very hard to find parts for. But a guy in ND (on internet search) claims to carry most parts.

I have ran Kirshman/Melrole/Lilliston drills since 1967 great drills, we had problems with the early wood bearings on the packers but changed them to ball bearings and no more issues, I have not had issues find parts myself

Sounds like you have used one. What are they like to transport. Haven't had time to go see the one I'll be looking at but I have the following concerns already.
How hard is it to take them apart and tow them down the road ( 2 8ft sections together will not fit down some of the dirt roads I'll be on and definitely will not go through a 10 ft. gate.)
I have been told that most of these don't have transport wheels, so the metal press wheels are in contact with the ground while roading them??

So what is transport like for them?

how far are we talking and gravel or blacktop? yes the packers carry the back half of the drill, if you have very far to go I would load them and haul them, I use a Donahue lay down machinery trailer but it is wider then 12' so that would not work for you, if you only have a few miles and are on a dirt road you could tow them but I would want to stay under 10mph with them, pavement I would not tow them on if they have the metal packers, our first one has rubber packers and they can be towed

I'm going to have to come up with a way to lift it/trailer it. Around 30 miles to go get it. Then my oportunities are all spread out. It will road 6 miles one way, 4 miles blacktop to one field. Then 21 miles a different way to the other field, all gravel.
