cutditioner

Those of you folks who run or who have run a NI cutditioner-- what gear can I expect to cut with in general? I will be running a NI 272 with an Oliver 770. Maybe 2nd or maybe 3rd low... or slower? I understand that it probably depends on conditions but how fast are you able to go in average timothy/clover mix?

I run a NI 290 cutditioner behind my Farmall H 2nd to 3rd gear. I also have a 770 WF but I prefer the Farmall with a NF, less fuel and turns sharper. I would agree with Randy on the 770.

I'm surprised you can run it with an H. I thought it took more HP than that. I have a narrow H that I like to mow with-- I guess that gives me some options. How thick/tall is the stuff you are mowing with the 290? Isn't that nine feet?

Mine is mostly Bromme and and a native wheat grass which is fairly thick, but if too heavy I shift down to 2nd.It runs 2 to 3 feet tall. Most of my alfalfa is dry land so its light to medium depending on the rain we get so 3rd works very well.
Yes it's a 9 foot.

You're talking about two different kinds of machine. A 290 is a sickle machine (mow/ditioner). The 279 is the 9-foot cut flail machine (Cut/ditioner). I had a Mathews Company 9 foot rotary scythe which is similar to a New Idea 279, and it worked the snot out of a JD 4020 in heavy hay.

I'm not sure how the ground speeds correspond off the top of my head. I operate my 272 in mostly mixed hay with a Farmall 806 in low range, 4th gear direct drive. Pretty much the same with Dad's 706. I have used it behind an M, But 2nd is a pretty good workout. This is in the hills of Southeast Ohio.

Yes as already pointed out there is a huge difference between a New Idea Cutditioner and a New Idea Mowditioner. The Cutditioner is like a rotary scythe or flail type mower where the mowditioner is a sickle based haybine type machine.

Cutditioner are known to be hp hogs. Pretty safe that a Farmall h will not run a 9' or a 7' for that matter cutditioner.

On the other hand the Farmall h will run a 7' mowditioner or a 9' mowditioner.

I Run a 9' Hesston 1120 mower conditioner (sickle based cutter with crimper like a haybine) with my ole Farmall h on occasion. Sure the Farmall M handles it better but the H can certainly do it too.

Thanks for all the knowledgeable responses. I should have been more clear-- it's a NI 272 cutditioner-- flail mower-- I have a gas Oliver 770 that I will probably mostly be using-- about 52hp. I also have a farmall M and a cobbled together Oliver 77 with a Ford falcon engine that maybe could run it in a pinch. In any case I guess it will be a little quicker than the narrow h and a JD #5-- which is what I have been doing (eighty acres) for many years. This year, the grass was very thick-- many neighors quit because the grass was too thick for a sickle bar or haybine. Thanks again

The 272 is the seven footer, 3rd gear keep the rmps up.
One thing that is nice with them they really brake that hard to dry clover up. I would say cut drying down by a day. HaveFun!
