McCormick Deering No9

Hello,

I am looking to see if anyone has a template for the grass board for McCormick mowers. I am doing a restore for the wife for a yard ornament but want to do the restore with the grass board on mower.

Pull the mower out of woods after I cut down a tree that was 10od between the axle and pitman arm. Pitman arm is rotted away only thing left of the tongue was the part with the bolt holes where it attached to mower, and the grass board was long gone. This mower could be restored to work again with lots of TLC but don't think I going to go that far.

Thank You

Tim

Sounds like a $250 piece of yard art now, working condition $1,000 repainted new cutter parts $1,250. Hate to see a valuble piece like that used as yard art but better than scraping.

Send me your email or phone, I should have a drawing of the grassboard for a IHC No 9. Might be for a McCormick though.

Do you have all of the iron parts for the grass board? Spring, metal running/wear edge and flat metal support for side of the wood.
I also have a few NOS pitmans with iron ends, but I'm not sure of the models that they fit.

I may tinker with a full restoration rolling it around in my head now. Oh it will never go for scrap as long as I live.

Hi Loren,

I have attached 2 pics. The 1 pic will show you what is left on the top shoe? not sure that is correct name. The blade is to long for the sickle so I think maybe previous owner remover grassboard. I will have to get on fleabay and find a manual for my mower so when I ask for help or parts I can use there correct name.

I will need to get the 2 pitman plates when I put the pitman arm back on as the plates at the flywheel end are pretty much shot.

I do have both parts and operators manuals and will make copies for cost of doing so. Cannot email so snail mail only. opening email. They are still a very popular ( most desired )to use mower around me and with the horses.

If you have a pattern, drawing, parts description or picture, or the old part, most any woodworker can make new parts for you.

I have a #9. You have all the metal parts you
need in the pic to make the grass board. I have
never used a factory board and I don't think
Daddy did either. A 1x6 About 3 feet long is
what you need, bolted to that piece of steel
with the rusty square nut holding it on. There
is supposed to be a steel piece that goes on the
bottom of the board to prevent wear as it slides
along the ground. That piece was worn out or
missing when I made the last board so I nailed a
strip of tin to the bottom. There is one other
metal piece you are missing. A round stick,
think piece of hoe handle with the thick end
being used, has the end sawed off at an angle
and fastened to the board on the inside. It is
mounted at an up angle, maybe 45 degrees. The
angle where it is fastened to the board is more
that 45 degrees. The missing metal piece is
fitted over the end of the stick with carriage
bolts so hay won't get caught, hopefully. It
covers the end of the stick and supports it.
The reason for the whole assembly is to throw
hay over so the mower blade has a clear path for
the next round. You won't need all that for a
yard ornament, just the board.

I ought a new Vermeer 7030. It came with a
steel grass board more or less as the wood one
described above and useful for the same purpose.
When making sharp right turns the end of the
cutter bar swung around and backed up enough to
catch the grass board and bend back the mounting
bracket. I had to take the grass board off and
often I have needed the grass board, but can't
handle the tearing up of part of the cutter bar.

Hi Leroy,
Thank you for reply.
Let me know the cost of making the copies please. I think it may be cheaper that way than fleabaying for them.

And I also have an NO 6 McCormick Deering looking for manuals for it. It is in bad shape ie ( sickle, blades, guards ) but it is 100% complete minus all the wood and pitman arm straps.

Thanks
Tim

We need to switch over to email only for that so I need your email and also postal mail. If you look on clasic view down in lower right hand corner you will se send email, Click on that and you will get me. I also have the parts book for the No. 6 (or is it the Big 6?) different parts listing. Think I might have a operators manual for a Big 6 but would have to check. Might take me a few days to hunt them up. Also I have good used guards of orignal style that I replaced with rock guards when last year I redid a Big 6 and a high gear No. 9 mower, The No. 9 was in the field this year, not sure about the Big 6. I may have the pitman irons, would have to check. Leroy

Thanks for the heads up on the seat. I hate to have to shoot a man for old iron seat.

Can someone help me ID these parts and tell me the bolt size that mounts the sickle to shoe there are 3 of them. I think they are 5/8 # 4 head plow bolts.

Is this the 9 or 6? They take different size bolts and they are not a plow head bolt but a special head. I am not sure what Truman uses when he rebuilds the mowers (horse drawn mowers his specility) but he is where most of the Amish get their mowers from and mowers that he rebuilt I delievered a pair of No. 9 to a local farm (Berne, In.) and the Farmer was getting ready to ship them to Misouri where he was going to move to. 1,000? mile. So I know he has to have a supplier for those bolts. The head is bigger than a plow bolt and shaped differently. Also that is a knife head rear hold down with shims to adjust play and they vary with different models of mower and I know he has a supply for them. When I find the books I can give complete numbers and sizes. Some of the parts are the same as the last pitman mower McCormick made. And I got your email. Between other things it will take a while to go thru about a thousand McCormick manuals.

Hi Leroy,

That picture is all for the No 9 mower.

Thanks for any help on the bolts or where I may be able to find them and the parts that were rusted out where the bar bolted to mower.
