Packed ground

I sold some timber, the cutters chose one of my truck patches to set up their loader, skidder area.

they are gone,

so today I took my field cultivator over there to break up the soil in that truck patch. Do not know if I will be able to have a garden there for a year or two as the ground was packed hard. However, we did not have any rain when they were working so the ground was not tracked up.

was that the right thing to do, breaking up the garden area so it can soften up this winter?

ground was packed hard, gave my little TO35 a fit pulling the cultivator, the spring shovels were vibrating. But it appeared to loose up the soil.

hope to plant sweet corn in the spring.

will see if it works.

Head right back out there and run it as deep as you can while it's good and dry this Fall. You can't hurt compacted soil by breaking it up when it is dry.

Might not heal it entirely, but you did a good thing by trying to shatter it up as best you could.

agree. And that is why there are subsoilers in 1 shank sizes to fit your Ferguson and they will go deeper than what you are using and you want all the depth you can get. If you can get one of those subsoilers then make a pass not wider than every 3' and then criss-cross it. Would also help your other patches as well. Around here to do good you need deep fall tillage at least every other year.

Strong 4 foot high fence around the patch, then 6 half/ 3 quarter grown pigs to the acre, toss out some ear corn and hay slices for 2 weeks to a month before hog slaughter after hard frost. Ground is weeded, feeded, and tilled, de bugged of over winter insect larva- possible root worms- and then one pass with tillage in spring and then plant sweet corn. Hogs go to locker or smoke house. Old fashioned way that some Amish still do since they have the fence yet- and some gardeners also have fence to keep out the deer, etc. Mild Teasing Alert! RN.
