Starting restoration of a IH 100 Balanced head mower

A couple years back I bought a IH 100 in rough shape. Its all there, just solid rust. I have no had time to do anything with it until now but I'd like to get started on it over the winter.

The U joints in the PTO shaft are froze up so I know they'll need to be replaced, also needs a belt and idler pully but I know those are readily available. The drive pulley and wobble box both turn freely, doesn't really seem like there's much play in the wobble box. All I see under the caps on the box is cobwebs.

I'm just wondering where to begin with the wobble box? If at all possible I'd like to not have to dig into the it, I hear they're fairly complicated. Should I soak the whole box in kerosene or solvent to get the old dried up grease loosened up and cleaned out or would that cause more harm than good to the old bearings?

Here it is the day I bought it. $90 was all I paid so if it turns out to be scrap I did ok.

I used to use one, they are a good mower. While I have never been into the gear box of one, I have been into others like a Tedder and a rake. both had little but dried up grease in them, so I would urge you to open it up. The ones that I opened weren't bad because the bearing and seal from one side came off with the cover, and there was no problem with stuff falling out.

There's NO gearbox. (And no gears.)

The "wobble drive" is inside an open housing, with several sets of bearings that have seals and grease zerks.

He can easily take off the upper part of the open housing to get in there to clean up the dirt and grease.

Parts are still available through Case/IH or Rowe's Rakes in Nebraska. They actually still make most parts that will work. I jut rebuilt an IH 1300 unit using help from them. They can also service the wobble box, and being as old as you have I would strongly suggest shipping it in. They did good work on mine.

As for the PTO shaft if yours has the pin connection at the mower, you will have a tough time finding a replacement. Rowes can fabricate a replacement - Mine was frozen up too and no one had the parts. Everything is spline ends now on both ends.

Good luck

PS another source of help is the Red Power magazine web site - they specialize in IH products.

I called and talked to Webbs Sickle service when i worked on my pitman mower, and i can not say enough about them. They have a bunch of Made In America parts, and the prices are the best.

They also have great help and customer service, look them up and talk to them.
