Hello, and a NH 276 Issue

Introductions first:
My name is Aaron and I'm from south eastern British Columbia. I've got a 5 acre hobby farm, of which approximately four acres is usable as hay. Also the neighbors have a few acres that they don't use. Moved in a couple years ago so I'm trying to get set up.

So this weekend I ran into a NH 276...free! Came with a NH 56 side delivery rake too!

Well I suspected the worst, but when I got to the place it was a woman who's husband had died a decade earlier and the baler had sat since then. It looks to be in good shape (Haven't run it yet). Its pretty clean, all the parts are there, everything works when you spin the flywheel.

However, the guy that owned it must have wanted to replace the wheel bearings at some point, and so took out the spindle. So I have a hub, cap, tire, slotted nut and etc..., but no spindle. It was nowhere to be found.

In order to get it home I borrowed the spindle off my dads NH 273, and that got me to thinking that possibly a lot of NH balers shared spindles. Anybody know? Also, anybody know where to get one.

Thanks
Aaron

I assume you used the spindle, hub and wheel
from the 273? The 276 is a heavier baler and
using a spindle from a lighter baler might not
work long term. I have never used a 276 but
presently am working on a 270. It uses a 15
inch tire probably 6.70 x 15 or so size
originally, but the original is long gone. If
you have the original tire it will give you an
idea of the load range the wheel assembly is
built for. If I am mistaken and you used the
273 spindle only in your hub and bearings the
answer is simple. You just have to look for a
27X series junked baler. Or you can bite the
bullet and buy a new spindle from New Holland.

I used the spindle tire hub and all off the 273. The baler had an ag tire with it but im not sure if it's original. I will have to back check against the size you gave.

Thanks for the reply

I bet new ones are available from New Holland. If
I were you, I would clean, grease, put twine in
it, hook it up to a tractor, break a few bales and
feed them thru it, see what it does first. If it
makes bales and appears to be working well, buy a
new spindle. I have 3 276's 2 of them work great,
make very nice tight square bales. If it is tight
and works, well worth buying a spindle, especially
for what you paid for it! Good luck.

Is it like this one? If so, found this one online for $250

what side do you need it for? The pickup side and the plunger side are different. I have a 275 parted out, it should be the same as what you need. Email is open. Let me know if I can help.

If you're feeling rich Messicks has one in stock for $170! That's for the left side. The right doesn't have as much weight on it, so it's probably smaller - and is $200. Go figure...

And by the way, do not forget to check the oil
in the gear boxes before you run it. On one of
mine I had a problem with it breaking the drive
chain from the front gear box that runs up to
the knotter and feeder drives. Behind the
front sprocket there are a couple of bolts that
hold the gear box to some of the sheet metal,
the top bolt had worked itself loose and was
catching the chain, causing the breaks. I now
check that bolt every time before baling, of
course since I tightened it, it has not come
loose again, just something I learned to watch
for the hard way.

My cell is 605 770 one eight zero 7. I would send you the one I have complete with hub and bearings ready to bolt on for 60 plus shipping. Give me a call if your interested. I could pull it this weekend.

AAron, if that is the worst problem you have with a baler that has beeen sitting for many years.....you are a luck son of a gun.

Yeah I'm happy so far. Just greased it and the rake up yesterday. It's raining now though so I can't try it out. Jay rake is helping me out with a spindle too so should be in working condition soon.

If that deal fell through, there is nothing special about that spindle. They were used on many different implements and wagons. I remember as a kid, Dad scavenged a spindle off an old wagon out back as a quick temporary fix for the forage chopper, until he had time to weld the broken original. It looked very strange with the spoked wheel.

Any salvage yard with some old implements should be able to set you up.

Yeah looks like I will have to do that.
