Got a 50s 140W Case bailer that wont tie, and I cant find anybody that knows anything about them. Im in NE Okla, by Tulsa

Read the manual thoroughly and then check each phase of tying a knot by tripping the knotters and have someone slowly turn the flywheel while you check. Look for worn, bent, broken parts and parts out of adjustment.

If there is a real old farmer around, have him check the knotters. If they ran a binder, they know a lot about knotters.

Im getting a manual tomorrow. There is NOTHING broke in it. Im thinking the wire isn't cutting, but, im by myself, so I cant turn the flywheel and watch it tie at the same time. I also cant pitch hay to it and watch it tie.

There are NO old farmers on this side of dirt in Okla. Im told they quit farming in the 40s, after the dust bowl and after the gov sowed everything to grass. The gov paid them not to farm for 10yrs, and sowed the growd back to grass. After the 10yrs was up, most had sold all their farm machinery, and had, by then seen the benefits in ranching. That and wheat farming is all that is done around here, and dang little wheat is grown around here.

I have pitched the hay,, watched it tie, and turned it over by myself a few times. The key is to clean it out first so that there is no pressure, and feed enough for just a flake between tries.

I haven't repaired any Case balers but I repaired plenty of JD wire balers. What's it doing/not doing? Are all the wire guide rollers free to turn with no "flat spots" in them? I've discovered in the last few yrs that wire manufacturers don't put very much oil on the wire coils so I add oil to the wire in the boxes to aid in tying process.

Several things. First, oil the wire. 1 qt per roll, especially old wire. Then look at the cut end. is it a clean shear,or kinda 'smeared'?The knife/anvil assy must have NO MORE that a half wire thickness between. the closer the better. Then look at the twister and all the places the wire 'tracks'. look for any grooveing. Grooveing is bad, causes wire to hang up. File those grooves smooth. As was said, Get the book. read it through. then starting at the 'top', adjust everything to 'factory specs., inspect for waer/defects.Good luck, baler work can make the Pope cuss........Thats about all I can tell without seeing the thing/'knots'.
