Adjusting a bushhog for use on a farm tractor

I would appreciate some information on the set up of a 4 foot john deere bushhog and a 5 foot king cutter bushhogs.
I set up these bushhogs with the front end of the bushhog lower that the back end of the bushhog. A friend of mine sets his 4 foot kubota blushhog level. It is my opinion that there is less strain on the tractor by having the front end of the bushhog lower that the back. My tractors are a J.D. 850 and a ford 2N and 8N. I use the the 5 foot mower on the fords and the 4 foot mower on the john deere. What is the recommemded way to set up a bushhog for cutting behind a rarm tractor
I set the front of the bushhogs about 1=2 inches lower that the back of the bushhogs.

It's probably the same as you are doing now. It should be level side to side and with most if not all of these kinds of rotary mowers, per the manual on my old Rhino SE-6, the front should be lower, I set mine about an inch.

DeltaRed,
Sounds like my 1-2 inches lower is too low for the front? Maybe 1 inch?
Thank you,

Billy NY,
Thanks for the information. You must have a big tractor if you are using a Rhino SE 6. I sold a rhino 5 foot several years. It was too much for my John Deere 850 with its 3 cylinder yanmar diesel. The J.D. would run it but had to use lower gears which made cutting slow. I had bought it new and the dealership would not let me return it. Sold it and bought a 4 foot john deere bush hog which is a good combination for the 850. The ford tractors 2N, and 8N, run the 5 foot king cutter without problems.

DeltaRed,
2 inches low at the front works good for me.
Mainly wanted to confirm that having the bushhog lower at the front is the correct adjustment

In bigger, ranker brush, you will want the Back much higher than the front, so the mower can throw the cut residue out more easily.

For nice, short grasses, you will want the mower nearly level..but lean toward a Lower Front..

Ron.

Bushhog papa,
Thanks for the info.
Chris
I am now convinced that setting the front end of the bush hog lower than the back is good, different cutting situations require different settings
Chris

I have had a Woods M-5 for probably 25 years. I have never worried about it being higher or lower at one side or one end than the other, simply because I am not equipped to be able to set it closer than an inch off. Even if I get it within an inch the terrain is going to insure that one end or one side is constantly higher than the other.

Showcrop,
I still have a woods 4 foot 3 point bushhog that I bought new in
1973. Still in excellent shape. It is very heavily built. Much
heavier construction than my newer john Deere and an older
king cutter, 5 foot I have. Is your woods heavily built? Paid
$275 for my 4 foot woods in 1973. You are right about the
terrain. My tractors are small in hp. 22-30 hp. When setting the
5 foot land pride level, I use a cement slab to set my mowers
Puts a lot more drag on the tractor engine when the 5 foot
mower is set level. Same for the 4 foot bushhogs I have.
Chris

I run about 3" lower in front on a 5 ft'er. Works well in heavy stuff. Amazing in green stuff how much less power sharp blades take. In dry or brushy stuff I can't tell the difference.

(quoted from post at 07:40:59 10/15/14) why dont folks realize that bushhog is a BRAND name. all rotary mowers are not bushhogs!!

Aspirin was originally a brand name. Just another example of probably hundreds.

Wilson ind,
Sorry about misuse of the word bushhog. Seems everything I read about the rear mounted mowers I have: groups them in the category bushhog, I will not use an incorrect term again
Chris. Ones I have are john Deere, woods, and kingcutter

why I posted this is a matter of quality. Not to pick on you, it'a just that a king cutter or other rotary mower from chain farm stores usualy will not have the quality of a BUSHHOG brand.
