Can any one tell me if there was a monitor for the JD 1240 corn planter (Plateless version).

Thanks
John

John,
Are you SURE you want to add a monitor to a 1240?
If you are thinking of buying a 1240 please go lay down a while until the thought goes away!
Seriously, there are a lot of good 7000 planters around that are far superior.
Donjr is giving you some good info.

Thank you for all the responses. Fact is I already have a great working plateless 1240 but once in awhile it skips and I thought with a monitor I could stop and fix the problem. A 7000 or 7200 with liquid Fertilizer is in my future but will not be for awhile.
Thanks again
John

I just found a 4-row Dickey John monitor to use on my 1240 by searching on Craigslist. $15 for the monitor. All this one does is check whether seeds are falling past the sensors in the runners. What will be hard to find are the seed sensors. I had a set from a parts planter but haven't tried to test them with the monitor.

And I for one would NEVER have a 7000 series. The 494A and 494 Will plant as good a the 7000 ever will and the 1240 is a 494 just with plateless units instead of plates. Would if needing a planter go to any other make than a 7000. I kno people will want to argue over this but when I first saw them when new I hated the design.

Kerwin,
That is exactly what I want to do. Does the monitor have a model number so I can start looking.

Thanks
John

I have planted corn with both a 494 and a 7000. There is no question which one is the best planter. As good as the 494 and it's decendants were in their day they will not hold a candle to a properly adjusted 7000. No way. My corn yields went up when I got a 7000 several years ago. I didn't think I could afford one (many were still planting with plate planters at that time) but once I did so I wondered why I didn't do it sooner. I now plant with a 1760 vacuum planter and it is better yet than the 7000 was. I'm like many of the others. By the time you find the correct sensors for your planter you will be well on your way to a 7000. Even a worn out one will do better than a good 494. One in good condition is that much better. Mike

John,

I"ll look for a model number tonight and post back. Do you have the seed sensors for the runners or will you be looking for those, too? I don"t think they are available from Deere anymore.

You"ll need harnesses from the sensors to the monitor. Original method was to have a planter harness and a tractor harness. In my case I got the generic tractor harness with the monitor. I found a 1240 planter harness on ebay. Not perfect, but it"s pretty easy to patch the wires.

The stuff is out there but you"ll probably not find it all from the same source. Planter gets scrapped or sold with sensors, guy keeps monitor, etc.

Kerwin,
No I don't have sensors or harness. I'll start looking for them.

Casenut1,
If you can find the monitor that would be great. My email is [email protected] and we can work out the details.

Thank you all for the help!

John
