Nh 616 chopper

I have a Nh 616 one row chopper. Wandering how to sharpen the knifes?? There is a sharpener on it just don't know the procedure?? thanks!!

I don't know the 616, but a 717 or 718 is probably similar. Move the drive line on the left side of the chopper head to the lower gear to make it run backwards. Remove the shield over the knives, and lower the stone to just above the knives. Start the tractor and run the pto at about half speed and lower the stone to the blades. run the stone across the blades smoothly and several times, lowering the stone as necessary to maintain a light contact at the end of the sweep. Lock the stone by tightening the operating handle after you lower it. Don't grind more than you need to, but get the knives fairly sharp so they will cut rather than mash the crop off. Raise the stone and put the shield back into the machine, then reset your shear bar to the new knife position.

Is not a 616 a flywheel cut machine? The 717 is cylinder cut and does have a sharpner built in. I think the unit we had 35 years ago was a 616, not sure anymore and it was a flywheel cut and for that you had to unbolt the blades and take them to a grinder. Dealer at that time had a grinder to presion sharpen them but dought if there is any left in existance. Amish friend with machine shop a couple of weeks back sharpened a set for their stationary silo filler but do not know how he did it.

616 was built 1960-1964. It is not a fly-wheel type cutter-head machine. Parts diagram shows a sharpener stone that was moved back and forth over the cylinder-type cutter-head as the cutter-head was turning. I do not know if the cutter-head was reversible or not as is the 718 that someone described.
Here is just what you need... Operator's manual available for it:
