stump jumpers

Any one ever run a 15' batwing without stump jumpers? looks like a good chance of breaking something without them.

My father hit so many rocks with his SE-15 that I finally cut the stump jumpers off because they were so badly damaged. He did always keep the slip clutches operational. He continued to hit things and occasionally ruined a u-joint or yoke or shaft, but the mower is still operational.

my JD 1517 has no stump jumpers, stock from JD. it has blade carrier bars only.

here' a low res pic.

it is presumably for clean light to medium duty cutting.

Yup, I run a JD 1508 batwing without stump jumpers. It has the slip clutches which are kind of a pain to keep loose. It never sets out, either!

I don't ever worry about it because I tend to be overly cautious with that kind of machinery. I have mowed everywhere that I mow for many years and know all of the obstacles. I would be concerned about mowing someplace foreign to me with it. Come to think of it, I have three rough cut mowers and none of them have stump jumpers.

I would look at the rotary cutter machines the dudes use to mow the highway right of ways.

whatever they have must be tough and able to withstand the harsh environment. tires, trash, post, debris of all kinds

get one with good slip clutches and a stump jumper.

better to slip a cutter clutch or straighten a stump jumper than to rebuild or replace a tractor differential, pto clutch or cutter gearbox.

just my two cents:

if you are anything like me you will hit something you did not know was there!!!!!

I have an old 5' pull-type that doesn't have a stump-jumper on it. I pull it with my 9n and as dad would say, "it'll cut whatever you've got guts enough to run over". I have sheared a couple pins of course, but otherwise, it hasn't broken anything else. If I were in your shoes, I'd run the darn thing, carry a 1/2 dozen shear bolts in the tool box, and not worry about it.
