John Deere 214 WS baler

Hello, I was wanting to know what size wire to use in my recently purchased John Deere 214WS baler. I am trying to correct the issue of it only working properly about 50% of the time. I have replaced the twisters, grippers, and kinkers and it still misses one side about half of the time. It is not consistent with the same side as it bounces from one side to the other. I was wondering if it just is simply the wrong size wire. It is like it doesn't kink it properly and one bale only has one wire then the next bale ties ok but it has an extra wire hanging loose off of it that is from the previous bale that was missing a side. I am new to this so any direction would be most helpful.

Are all the wire guide rollers free to turn with no flat spots in them??????????

To my knowledge there's only one diameter of wire in a 6500 ft roll of wire which is 14-1/2 gauge. I have better luck using wire from TSC. My JD 347 has baled nearly 1000 bales without mis-tying since I started baling with the "Red Brand". Both other brand wires I used were "too dry" and had inconsistencies in the wire diameter or strength. You can try pouring oil on the wire in the boxes to help tying issues.

Hello, Thanks Tx Jim, I appreciate your help. I looked at the wire guides like you said. The rollers were free as I had freed them up earlier but the wire guide by the twisters are worn pretty good. I looked up the parts and have tried to order them thru the local JD dealer but the part number is obsolete so I will start the search for some after market or used one's. They look like they could be welded and built up which may ne my last resort. I also noticed that the twister hooks were in a different position for each other. It looks like they may be a tooth out of time with one another so I will have to look at timing them so they are equal. Thanks again for your help and any additional info would be great too.

Just use a grinder to grind the wire groove out of the cast iron block under tying system and that will fix that problem. E11354 guide has been subbed to FH312310 GUIDE ADD 115.64 USD which is the guide used on new model balers such as the 348. Cycle needles up into tying system and check to see if needles come within 1/8" of twister shaft and just barely clear the nose of wire gripper when it shifts from side to side. Twister hooks being a tooth off shouldn't affect timing. Ideally twister hook point when in home position should be even with bolt that gripper pivots on. There's a brass shear pin that goes in a sprocket on the knotter gear case drive that you should get a spare as they wear out over time. It's hard to believe it cost as much as it does as I've sold 100's of them when I worked for a JD dealer.

Thanks I appreciate all this info. I will check out the clearances and get an extra pin. I will also look at grinding down the wire guides. I have noticed and maybe you have seen this before. after we have made a few bales I get off and go back to look at the twister mechanism and I usually find some short maybe 1 to 2 inch long pieces of wire that are wrapped around the twister shaft. Have you ever seen this before and if so what is causing it? Thanks

Yes I've seen wire wrapped around twister shafts.Look at twister shafts to see if there's any wire grooves in them. Pouring oil on wire rolls will help this a little.
